Erica Kirov is an American writer of Russian descent. Though she is not from a family of magicians, she is from a proud family of Russians, and she grew up hearing stories of their lives there.

Erica lives in Virginia with her husband, four children, three dogs, parrot, and her son's snake (she really hates snakes). She is busy at work on the next Magickeepers novel.

A story of magic and adventure!

Magickeepers: The Eternal Hourglass is simply amazing. This is a story of great imagination, magic, and the power to believe in oneself. For lovers of Harry Potter, this new series by Erica Kirov is sure to be a huge hit. Geared toward middle school age children, I sincerely feel that Magickeepers will find an avid audience that far surpasses that age range.

With summer on our heels and many young voices complaining that they are bored, or have nothing to do, Magickeepers will provide that engaging entertainment that both parents and children will love. This is a story that will engulf it's reader and send them on a wondrous adventure of good vs. evil and magic galore. I dare not forget to mention the powerful yet protecting white tigers, polar bears and a rare breed of horse called Akhal-Teke.

Within this amazing story, the author brings to surface such known names as Houdini and Rasputin, powerful people of their time, and sure to pique the reader's interest to read about these people outside of the walls of Magickeepers. The delightful way that Ms. Kirov intertwines historical facets throughout Magickeepers, brings an even greater dimension to the story.

As young Nick Rostov turns thirteen, his life is suddenly twisting out of control and he wakes up to discover himself in a strange room, complete with a ceiling of clouds that actually appear to be moving before his very eyes. He is told that he is a gazer - a rare and powerful talent from a long family line of magickeepers. His mother tried to escape while she was pregnant with him, only to have her life taken away by a powerful Shadowkeeper, leaving her infant son behind to be raised by his loving yet "normal" father.

It is shortly after he awakes in this strange room that he is told of his family linage and the struggle the Magickeepers face to keep themselves and their powerful magic hidden from the Shadowkeepers. Once Nick comes to join the family, however, it is not long before Rasputin finds him and tries to strike a bargain. Nick has something powerful that Rasputin wants and he will stop at nothing to get it. However, will Nick be able to discover what that desired object is before it is too late? Can he save himself, as well as the Magickeeper family that he has come to care about?

The ability of an hourglass to turn back time is a powerful tool, though a highly dangerous one, if it is placed in the wrong hands. Magickeepers: The Eternal Hourglass is a story that transcends time and age. It is sure to become an instant hit and I, for one, anxiously await the next installment in this magical series.

I sincerely hope that you get a chance to read this wonderful and imaginative tale by Erica Kirov. What an excellent book for parents and children to share and talk about together! A great way to add a bit more fun to summer!

Fun start to a series!

I thought the Eternal Hourglass was a great set up for a series. Right away, main character Nick is plucked out of the life he knows with his father and grandfather and placed in this large Russian family that lives and works within the Winter Palace in Las Vegas. They are the relatives of his mother and they are all magicians! I felt sort of bad for Nick's dad who also worked as a magician at another nearby hotel but he's not very good at what he does. I did really like seeing how this family operates though. I especially liked Nick's cousin Isabella and her white tiger Sascha. I like the idea of animals that we would normally fear being part of this family!

What I thought was really clever is that the author takes pieces of history and melds them into this book thus getting readers interested in finding out more about these pieces of history. It was interesting to see how these flashbacks related to the present storyline. I also liked Nick's lessons from learning how to use a crystal ball to switching out Isabella for Sascha those were some great parts of the story for me!

I think the story will work best for younger teens and older children but I still had a great time reading it. It will be interesting to see what other kinds of adventures Nick gets into with his new family. I sure hope he still gets to see his dad and grandpa!

Terrific Start to a New Series

I am so glad that I have a daughter who loves to read because it forces me to read books that I probably wouldn't have picked up otherwise. Thanks to her, I have recently discovered how many great middle-grade books are out there. MAGICKEEPERS: THE ETERNAL HOURGLASS BOOK ONE by Erica Kirov is another example of a terrific book for young readers that I really enjoyed.

I thought the basic premise of this novel is terrific. On his 13th birthday, Nick realizes that he can see into the past while looking through a crystal ball in a magic shop. He also learns that his mother, who died when he was a baby, was a member of a family of Russian magicians. His grandfather takes him to live with his "family;" and they begin to train Nick so he can learn how to use his powers. The book really takes off when Nick gets involved in a battle with the Shadowkeepers over an Eternal Hourglass that can stop time. There is a ton of action in this novel, and it's actually a very fast-paced read.

So many of the characters in this novel are extremely interesting, but I absolutely loved Nick. Nick was just a terrific character who, despite his abilities, seemed very real to me. He is a young boy who is forced to grow up very quickly and accept that his life will never be the same. Although he was constantly facing challenges that appeared to be impossible, he handled everything that came his way with a sense of maturity and intelligence. I think children will not only relate to Nick and his "normal" young teen feelings, but they will also look up to him as a hero and someone who did the right things for his family.

As is often the case in books like this, the characters must face off against evil; and in this story, it was the Shadowkeepers who were the enemy. I especially liked that Nick used not only his physical skills but also his intellectual prowess against the bad guys. There were riddles and spells that he had to figure out, and he also had to use his magical powers; however, I liked that he eventually was successful because he outsmarted them!

Not only did I find the story and characters interesting, but I really liked that there was a little historical information thrown in. The book doesn't get bogged down and read like a history lesson, but I thought it was a great idea for the author to mix in real-life historical characters like Harry Houdini and Rasputin. I can imagine that there will be some readers who are interested in learning more about Houdini and Rasputin, and this book might just make them do a little more research.

My daughter hasn't had a chance to read MAGICKEEPERS yet, but I'm pretty sure that she's going to love it. This book has all the criteria to make it a great read for middle-graders including action, suspense, and adventure. Plus there's the element of magic that certainly doesn't hurt! I think this book will appeal to both boys and girls (and their parents as well.) I am not alone in my praise for THE ETERNAL HOURGLASS because this novel is already generating some terrific buzz.

While the actual story about the Eternal Hourglass was resolved, the author definitely leaves the reader with some questions about Nick and his family's past. It's clear to me that there are a lot more stories to tell in the MAGICKEEPERS series; and I, for one, can't wait until the next book comes out.

THE Lego Minifigure Book

As a Adult Fan of Lego, I've been waiting for a book like this for a very long time. A truly must-have for any minifig collector. I've had the book since yesterday and I literally have not put it down. The book is jam packed with 255 pages of beautiful pictures of minifigures and the short explanations for each of them. The minifig is the star of this book, and rightfully so.

It starts with a brief history of the minifigure and how they are made. Then the book quickly switches to a timeline sort of structure for the rest of the book going by decades and years. This creates a incredible journey for the reader as you witness the progression and subtle advances of the Lego Minifigure. Now, if you're looking for a checklist of every minifig ever created, this is not the book. It does however highlight almost every genre ever created. From the classic Lego Space and Castle sets in the 70's, to today's modern and popular Chima and Star Wars lines. The features some of the most common minifigs, but also does a great job spotlighting some of the most rare figures. It also does a great job in pointing out slight differences between similar looking figs.

Collecting minifigs and playing with them has always been fun. This book highlights this by being informative, funny, and very addictive. It has already helped me put back together some of the mismatched minifigs I've had for years, but it has also made me want to add more to my already sizable collection. Therein lies the only problem with this book, the hunt for more is on.

A great book, I now know more about Legos then I ever will need to know...(from my son reading the book and then exclaiming "Cool! Hey Dad! Did you know...." My reply? "No, I didn't know that. That really is amazing!" I hope he finishes the book soon and goes back to star wars or J.R.R. Tolkien...

The Ulimate Lego Figures Book You Can Buy

I was absolutely astounded when I received this book! It will be a gift for my son, and I know he will be as amazed as I was. The book is filled with pictures and information of Lego figures of all kinds and years past. It was amazing to see how the figures have evolved over the years and just to see really how many of these little Lego guys/gals there are!

Plus, the book is huge. I did not expect it to be such a large volume filled with all kinds of wonderful Lego informtion!! If you are going to buy a book on Legos, this is the one to buy. Plus, it comes with 3 minifigures as a bonus. Definitely worth the price.

In short the Harris family has left a legitimate mark on the entertainment industry such straw figures like Suge Knight, Puffy Combs and Jay Z have only been able to accomplish through the extensive efforts of the public relations departments at Interscope and like minded companies. As the drama surrounding the collapse of Deathrow Records continues to unfold, it is more apparent with each financial revelation that Suge Knight and David Kenner never had the resolve to put together such an intricate and successful operation. Married to the Game touches on this fact without delving to deep into the story. Hopefully there will be a followup to this story with the complete story told. In the interim, purchase and enjoy this interesting title.

Married To The Game was a great readers choice for anyone who loves a real true story told in factual events. It gives you something to look back on to evaluate the essence how one person's struggle to keep their voice alive benefited so many others who have come and gone before us. Lydia Harris' account of what really occured in Compton was the evolution of a real story untold in the early 90's area of music. Most women luck up on prince charming and in this case Lydia Met Michael "Harry O" Harris, who was a classic man, who ran and owned several business' at very young age in his career. Lydia had no idea that one day in her near future, her life would be full of court room hearings, lawyers luncheons, and consistent sharks who wanted to take advantage of Michael Harris' empire. Soon Lydia and Michael would build their own joining ventures together and become one force under Godfather Entertainment.

It is a fact that a convicted felon cannot sit as an active CEO, therfore Lydia's role took full force in developing and planning the emerge of the label that would come to be called, Death Row Records. In some accounts upcoming artist at the time claim that Death Row came about from the guys chillin with "Suge" on what is considered "Tha Row" talking about what the name of the label should be. They came up with "Deaf Row" like "Def Jam" records which at the time was a popluar label in high demand with household name artist. In Lydia's, account she describes the title of the label as a common agreement between Lydia, Michael, Suge, and David. The reason it was called Death Row was because everyone on the label at the time had a criminal background and where fighting court cases. Michael and Lydia wanted to create a platform where young artist could be exposed to main stream media in the music industry and also be able to fight against the indifferences and injustices imposed on black communities during those times.

What actually ended up happening with Death Row Records, was not the initial intention for Lydia, Mike, and Suge. As we know somewhere along the way, David Kenner lost interest in helping build and protect the Empire and instead turned his back on the once and a lifetime opportunity for Urban Music and its Future. Ironically, in the four years of Death Rows Chart Ripping records, Death Row reigned in the music indudtry while also introducing to new concepts to the Game of music and entertainment. One concept was the introduction of Label Logo jewlery specifally gold chained necklace and double cds in what was reffered to the hip hop music. Both ideas were first introduced by the infamous Death Row Records.

So in my opinion Lydia Harris, not only fought for herself, she fought her daughter, Michael, Suge, Snoop, Dre. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Lady of Rage just to name a few... This is a leagacy worth honoring and paying homage too. In 2015, or in the near future. If Lydia were to do it all over again, return to the game that she "married" over 2 decades ago, who would be the next Artist to make a name for themselves with her knowledge and expertise in finding the next multi-platinum recording artist sale chart HIT. There is no telling where the music industry could turn for the future but we do know that it is a very high possibility that the music will touch many lives again! hip hop, gospel, jazz, country, alternative,pop, reggae, R&B. With the creation of new sound all across the world. We need a woman like Lydia Harris to show the world Who really knows how to execute with talented artist in the music industry having power and integrity and most of all your word. my food for thought! About the Author

J. Keri Cronin is an assistant professor in the Visual Arts Department at Brock University. She is also a faculty affiliate in Brock’s Social Justice & Equity Studies Graduate Program, the editor of The Brock Review, and part of the organizing committee for Greenscapes, a biennial conference on the cultural history of gardens held at Brock University. She is the author of Manufacturing National Park Nature: Photography, Ecology and the Wilderness Industry of Jasper National Park (2010).

Kirsty Robertson is a professor of contemporary art and museum studies at the University of Western Ontario. She has published widely in her two major areas of research, globalization, creative industries and activism; and the study of wearable technologies, immersive environments, and the potential overlap(s) between textiles and technologies. All time favorite series!

I can honestly say that the Charley Davidson series is my all time favorite. Darynda Jones has cracked the code of keeping a series fresh even after 10 books. I love every character in this series and they all play such an important role in what makes this series so amazing. In Eleventh Grave in Moonlight Charley is up to her usual Private Investigating activities while also dealing with the paranormal danger that is hanging over the gangs heads. The combination of the two is just perfect and makes the read so enjoyable.

In each book we discover new things that may rock Charley and Reyes world. But they are not without support from their friends and family. These group of people are amazing, I especially love Angel. His scenes are my favorites and I just love his interaction with Charley. In this book Uncle Bob is acting really strange, but nobody knows what is going on. We get to see more of Reyes' past and it is heartbreaking. Also Charley takes a case where she has to investigate Reyes' foster parents which Reyes is against. He does his best to get her to drop the case, but Charley is very headstrong and goes against his wishes. Reyes is still my number one book boyfriend, he is such an alpha male and very protective. The love between Charley and Reyes is perfect.

This book is a phenomenal addition to the series. It just gets better and better and the ending has me anticipating the next book like an addict. My love for the characters has grown stronger each book and I just hope this series never ends. I see the characters as part of my family and I cry when they cry and laugh when they laugh. This series is the only one that can make me laugh out loud one moment and cry the other. Charley is the best and I love her quirky and crazy ways, she is one of a kind and I can't wait for Reyes and her to reach their full potential. All the characters continue to grow each book and their bond becomes stronger.

The Curse of Tenth Grave left Charley with a lot on her plate, as per usual. Yes, she banished one rogue god to the god-glass necklace, but she still has one at large and needs to figure out how to take care of him, as Beep’s survival is on the line. Then, there’s the fact that she’s still trying to come to terms with her own godhood, her beef with Jehovah over which has caused his ever-vigilant angels to follow Charley around wherever she goes, plus the fact that Uncle Bob’s life may still be in danger despite having saved him from his foreseen death previously.

To top it all off, though, Charley is officially hired by Reyes’ sorta-kinda-in-a-way-brother Shaun to look into his adoptive parents the Fosters, and to find his real parents. Just a reminder: the Fosters are the people who stole Reyes from his birth parents and eventually sold him to the evil Earl Walker. Of course Reyes wants Charley to drop the investigation, but, come on; this is Charley Davidson we’re talking about. The moment she backs away from anything is the moment hell freezes over….oh wait.

I always love being back in Charley’s world and Eleventh Grave is certainly on par with all the wit and humor we’ve come to know and love from our grim reaper/god.

I’ve felt that ever since she had Beep, subsequently lost then regained her memories, and learned she is a god, there’s been an increased level of maturity to Charley, which is a nice element of growth to her character. Probably one of my favorite things about Eleventh Grave is that we get to see Charley really learn about and start to hone her powers, with Reyes acting as Charley’s Yoda/Obi-Wan—albeit with a bit more sexytimes however. Constantly, people are telling her what she’s able (or should be able) to do with her powers and she’s always been clueless. So it was really nice to see Charley gain some perspective on who she is because she still equates herself as human and it just isn’t true. But I do like the fact that Charley hangs on to her humanity, especially in the face of what we learn about her history.

Having said that, what really kept Eleventh Grave from being a five-star rating was the fact that I felt as though it was too jam-packed full of varying leftover storylines. I felt like all the open story threads from Tenth Grave were kind of just check-marked off the list to clear the way for what is happening in the next book, which is all set-up within the last maybe five to ten percent of the book. Unfortunately, I felt like a few scenes could have been throwaways because the resolution was just so quick.

That’s not to say Eleventh Grave wasn’t an enjoyable read. It certainly was. It just felt more transitory for me than revelatory. There’s a certain point towards the end where you get a definite feel of where the story will be heading in the next book, and I just wanted to tell Charley: “No! Bad Idea!” But alas, this is not a Choose Your Own Adventure book. So we’ll have to wait until fall to find out The Trouble with Twelfth Grave.

Great Story And Things Are Happening Faster Plus Another "WTF Just Happened" Ending

Well here we are 11 books deep into this series and we have some major movement on some things that go all the way back to the beginning of the series. Several mysteries are cleared up here and Charlie comes into her power a bit more.

This series has always had a bit of a formula about it but that has never lessen my enjoyment of these novels almost without exception. Charley is learning to make peace with the fact that she is a goddess with a lot of untapped powers which we get to see a few more this time around and we get glimpses of almost everyone we have gotten used to seeing and missing maybe 1 or 2 we expected to see in minor roles.

As always the real reason I love this series is not the actual plot (GASP!) but the humor which I love and wish I had t-shirts with a lot of these sayings not to mention the humor in the stories.

I have read many readers that get totally OCD over her naming of almost everything and while I think most of it is a bit silly it does nothing to interfere with what I consider some of the most entertaining stories around.

The romance is always so passionate it has almost gotten to the point of commonplace but this book is going to throw us several bones that end plot-lines that have been teasing readers for several books and as always she throws in a new storyline for the next book on the last page. It used to be frustrating but I have gotten used to it and don't really consider it a cliffhanger since it almost always starts a whole new story (as this one does).

Bottom Line: I loved it, loved the humor, loved the story, love the characters pretty much everything, I love the way she interjects a dose of reality into these stories, I was a bit concerned after last book with some serious anti-Judaeo/Christian elements but these are slowly smoothed over I thought as the book progresses and Charley sees that things are not as she thought them to be. So 5 Stars again and I can't wait for the next one since this ending was in the "WTF just happened" category .

An amazing collection of experiences heartfully recalled and richly told

There is not only sadness and heartbreak but joy, success, love, loss, pride and a great many very wonderful friendships. The author has experienced the greatest of tragedies but also the highs of success. The parties must have been amazing! I cried and I laughed.

Couldn't put it down!

A fascinating, funny, breathtaking, sad and inspiring story of a small boy growing up in wartime Athens and then growing up in New Zealand.
His grim early life - grinding poverty, desperate measures, hilarity, fear and hope - are riveting in their detail. This is a boy's life that would be unfamiliar to most, but Nikos' telling of it has you reeling from horror to hilarity. And then he has an opportunity to change it all for a new life in far away New Zealand. What follows is wide-eyed and humourous. He needs to learn an entirely new set of social norms in this strange land - and the lessons are confusing. There's more travel and even as a grown-up Nikos is still learning.
Some wonderful photos add to the story, and From Athens to Papakura is a story of a life well lived, and a man who loves the country of his youth even as he makes a new life on the other side of the world.

Loved this book as my mother emigrated about the same ...

Loved this book as my mother emigrated about the same time (to UK) and came from similar family background as Nikos. He writes extremely well and has captured the feeling of the times and the struggles he had to overcome getting to grips becoming a kiwi. The differences in the cultures was for him immense and I imagine it would've felt insurmountable at times. I met Nikos on a few occasions many years ago whilst living in Auckland and a member of the Hellenic Society so when I heard about this book, I really wanted to read it. I am also a half Greek immigrant to these shores, however my journey was much easier and very different to his. Would thoroughly recommend this book if you are interested in the Greek psyche with a bit of ancient history thrown in.

My high school teacher does it again, well researched and good as stories garnered from men I grew up knowing...Ray Hunt (Ghani) Oshlih, and John Holiday...

My only critique would be why he has no mention of the great medicine men and principal headline and figures that made up the settling and stories behind the history of the territory he writes about.

Where is Hashkenaneii, Spane Shank, Hataliih Hozhonih, Kayellih, Hasteen Altsis'eh', Ashii'ih' A'dil'loh'ih'...

He borrows and returns to repeating stories from Oshlhi and John Holiday, of which only one is a medicine man and the other a hand trembled diagnostic practitioner.

The First Book of its Kind

What I like about this book:

This is a textbook for academic writing in German. There have been textbooks for academic writing in English out for ages, but finally, there has been a recognition that German students need the same thing. The Preface indicates that the book is a compilation of material that was developed at LMU Munich to help students come to terms with academic writing. And although you can see how this was done, it does function well as a book and is clearly structured. Graefen is a competent linguist (her journal articles are worth reading) and this comes through in her detailed use of real texts in exercises and examples. The exercises are useful and intelligent. The vocabulary lists give you many options for formulating things elegantly. It focuses on the so-called "allt�gliche Wissenschaftssprache" (that is, the linking language that is used to join technical expressions - 'to treat a topic', 'to view something from a particular perspective', 'According to Rosner, this is due to...' etc.) which means that it is tied to no particular field and will be useful to many different students (though linguistic articles, given the authors' backgrounds, do predominate). Grammatical usage (function not form) is explained in detail. Solutions to the exercises are available on the author's website. Just what the doctor ordered.

What I dislike about this book:

Occasionally, there seem to be areas where some topics are treated and others are ignored. Certain words are given a whole section, but only a handful and I suspect that there are many more that could have been discussed but weren't. That said, the book is the first of its kind so I always expected a smaller scope than something that may appear in the future. But I have few complaints.
