Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

A worthy addition to anyone's collection

Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.

A Lingering Sense of Hope

'Until Angels Close My Eyes' is yet another example of Lurlene McDaniel's notoriously melancholy novels. As in her other books, McDaniels is able to portray a sorrowful mood through the characters. However, the final outcome is both depressing and uplifting at the same time. Had the book not had a little hope to cling on to at the end, I wouldn't have enjoyed reading it, but it did. The final message was that in the end, not all was lost.
Leah Lewis-Hall is a seventeen year old english teenager living with her mother and stepfather, Neil. Neil was Leah's mom's fourth and favorite husband, so Leah hoped he was around to stay. She was looking forward to living the rest of her life with just her, Neil, and her mother, that is until she was shot down with devastating news. Neil has cancer. A malignant cancer that could threaten his life. Leah liked Neil, a lot, and didn't want to see yet another father figure dissappear from her life, especially one she cared about so much. On top of that heart-breaking news, Leah had to face the reality that the cancer she once had could also return. So Leah had to live in constant fear of two lives being lost, hers, but mainly Neil's.
There was only one person that provided Leah with the comfort she needed to get through it all. Ethan, her sandy-haired, blue-eyed Amish boyfriend. She had met Ethan last summer while working in an Amish community, and instantly they fell in love with each other. The only problem was that Ethan was Amish, and Leah was English. The two worlds clashed immensly and there was a huge barrier inbetween the two cultures. Lately, Ethan had been experimenting with English ways, dressing English, and even moving out of his Amish household to live with Leah and her family. Leah and Ethan both knew their love was genuine and pure,and they both needed and cherished this love. But they also knew that this culture barrier between them could cause problems for both of their lives. Can Ethan and Leah's love hang tough through the biggest hurdeles of their lives? Can they defy the barrier between their two seperate worlds?
Although there is almost a sad tone throughout the whole book, there are instances that shine through with hope. For example, the angel Gabriella that saves Leah from her cancer, and the changed view from Leah on her mother. At the end of the novel, Leah had a new respect for her mother that came from all of her past and recent experiences. I enjoyed reading this novel because McDaniel balanced Neil's deteriorating cancer condition with certain episodes of hope that made you want to keep reading. The questions,"Will Neil live or die?" and, "Will Leah and Ethans love be able to hang tough?" are not really answered until the last few chapters. This factor makes 'Until Angels Close My Eyes' a quick read that you won't want to put down. My advice is, if you've never seen somebody turn something negative into a postive thing, read this book!!

Until Angels Close My Eyes was a very heart-warming novel

Leah is a strong young lady who is trying to complete the puzzle of her life that has never been finished. When she was sixteen-years-old she was diagnosed of bone cancer and the only thing she could hope for was a miracle, but instead she received the light of angels. After a while everything in Leah's life was going fine till she received the news that her loving stepfather, Neil had cancer. Leah didn't know what to do with herself, so she decided she needed a brake and to visit her true love Ethan at the Amish community. Ethan chose to make one of the most effective changes in his and Leah's life that left Leah in a complex situation that made her realize the reality ahead of her.

Until Angels Close my Eyes is an amazing book to read it pulls you in and gives you the picture of Leah's life. McDaniel made the characters and plot so realistic that I felt as if I was standing there with Leah and watching her grow into the strong young women she really is thought out the story.

Until Angels Close My Eyes is a beautiful story about love and what it takes to reach it. I would recommend this outstanding novel to anyone and everyone. If you enjoyed one of the books from the Angels Trilogy you would definitely take pleasure in this one. You also might end this book in tears.

WIll Their Love Last?

The book, Until Angels Close My Eyes by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book. Leah (main character) thinks her battle with cancer is over, but the disease that haunts her past has struck someone she loves. Leah finds comfort in a visit to Amish country to see Ethan. Ethan (boyfriend) is changing, his taste in what community he wants to live in. Can their love stay together through all these changes??
On a rating, one through five, five being the best, I would rate this book a four. It was a great book, but it could have had a little more development in the beginning it was kind of slow. There could have been not so much background information. Once it started to pick-up, I couldn't put it down. The author had a great story line. It was realistic, easy to fallow, and I could put myself in Leah's position. You could tell she put a lot of effort in her book. I thought the description of the cancer was very in-depth. She used all the terms in which the doctors would really use. Not just in this book, but also in all of her books I have read.

Keith Hirokawa is an Associate Professor of Law at the Albany Law School. His scholarship has explored convergences in ecology, ethics, economics and law, with particular attention given to local environmental law, ecosystem services policy, watershed management and environmental impact analysis. Stanley J. Ward serves as the Biblical Worldview director at the Brook Hill School in Bullard, TX. His education includes a BA from Oklahoma Baptist University, a MDIV from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and additional graduate studies in both Biblical languages and the Humanities. He is currently a PhD candidate at Dallas Baptist University, writing about how leaders can use stories to help followers internalize values.

A focus on what is often missing from the worldview discussion

Many worldview books--or books on Christian apologetics--focus heavily on attacking the "opponent's" worldview. They point out the deficiencies in various worldviews that contradict the Christian faith and offer ways to address, or rather, attack, these deficiencies. There is certainly a place for this in the field of Christian apologetics and I am thankful for such fine treatments of the subject by writers like Cornelius Van Til, Greg Bahnsen, John Frame, Gary DeMar, Douglas Wilson, etc. Christians are bombarded with attacks from intellectuals to television pundits to the man on the street. We need to know and be reminded of the solid intellectual and philosophical strength of our worldview.

However, what many of the worldview/apologetics books overlook is that it takes a listening ear to hear what our opposition is saying. Furthermore, in our zeal to win over souls by nearly combative evangelism, we often forget that we are sharing the gospel with people--fellow human beings. (Yeah, I know; many who oppose Christians are anything but civil and some treat us as if we're less than human.)

Stanley J. Ward's book reminds us that when we share the gospel, we are dealing with fellow human beings. Yes, he encourages readers to know their faith and faith story, but he also gives some helpful reminders about human communication and the skill of listening. Evangelism is about winning souls, but the job of conversion belongs to the Holy Spirit. Ward explains that we ought to focus on the conversation (which he describes as a process that occurs over the course of several discussions), and leave the conversions to the Holy Spirit.

This does not mean that Ward soft hands the conflict that often occurs between believer and unbeliever. He just chooses to focus on the communication process so that meaningful conversations can take place... and continue over time. He's not saying that all evangelism is "friendship evangelism," but he is certainly saying that we interact with non-believers in a friendly manner.

This book is a short, readable, and honest addition to the ever-growing catalog of books on worldview. Ward allows us brief glimpses into his own journey as a Christ-follower and a sharer of the gospel by including "conversations" that he's had with students at the school where he teaches. Along the way, we see that he has grown into the conversational approach--and it hasn't always been pretty. If we take heed to his argument about focusing more on the conversations we can have with unbelievers and less on worrying so about converting them, then his book serves its purpose.

I give the book four stars because while I agree with Ward's conversational approach, I think more information on addressing specific worldviews would be helpful. Still, he does include a good annotated bibliography of various worldview books for further study. I suspect that a companion volume that helps address the nuances and beliefs of various worldviews is in the works.

Great resource, especially for young adults and new adult Christians

Worldview Conversations, the latest project from Stanley J. Ward, Bible Chairperson and Worldview Director for The Brook Hill School in Bullard, TX, is a welcome addition in Christian apologetics. Far too often, we learn how to defend the faith with reason, logic, and facts. Far too rarely do we learn how to do so under the precepts of I Peter 3:15, "with gentleness and respect" (ESV).

Soon-to-be-Doctor Ward gives us practical advice about holding conversations with non-Christians. His methods focus on understanding and compassion, not on "scoring points" or "winning" arguments. He deftly explains the important difference between the "conversion" approach and the "conversation" approach.

This volume is peppered with vignettes which illustrate his personal experiences developing and employing his method. These stories show real-world examples of success and failure of various approaches, and show us all how we can better view our friends and acquaintances.

I would suggest this should be on every Christian leader's bookshelf, especially those who deal with people between the ages of 12 and 25. I would further suggest that "Conversations" classes should be developed by local church congregations to help us all implement the wisdom which came from Stanley Ward's experiences. Lastly, I would suggest those who study this book also load the Napkin Theology videos, also from Dr. Ward, onto their mobile devices for quick and easy illustration when in discussion with non-Christians.

Dane dives much deeper than I could have anticipated. Absolutely loved it.

Today the names of these young men—Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Dutch Schultz, Legs Diamond, Nucky Johnson—are more familiar than ever, thanks in part to such cable programs as Boardwalk Empire. Here, Mappen strips way the many myths and legends from television and movies to describe the lives these gangsters lived and the battles they fought. Placing their criminal activities within the context of the issues facing the nation, from the Great Depression, government crackdowns, and politics to sexual morality, immigration, and ethnicity, he also recounts what befell this villainous group as the decades unwound.

Making use of FBI and other government files, trial transcripts, and the latest scholarship, the book provides a lively narrative of shootouts, car chases, courtroom clashes, wire tapping, and rub-outs in the roaring 1920s, the Depression of the 1930s, and beyond. About the Author

MARC MAPPEN, PhD, teaches at Rutgers University. He is the coeditor of the award-winning Encyclopedia of New Jersey and author of Jerseyana: The Underside of New Jersey History (both Rutgers University Press). He has written articles for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Rutgers Magazine, and other publications and has appeared on the History Channel and National Public Radio.

This Little Gem Should Be In Your True Crime Library

I was initially skeptical about covering this subject in only 222 pages of text but author Marc Mappen has done a commendable job in including the thugs of Chicago and New York during the years when alcohol was banned in America with the passage of the 18th amendment. The subtitle of the book is "The Rise and Fall of A Bad Generation" and as Al Capone said, "The federal government put me in business." Trying to legislate morality was doomed to fail in America while gangsters recognized their ability to provide a product (alcohol) that Americans were bent on consuming regardless of the law.

Whatever gangster you can think of during this time period is included in this book be it Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Lepke Buchalter, Meyer Lansky, "The Mad Hatter" Albert Anastasia, or "the Beer Baron of the Bronx" himself, Dutch Schultz. These and numerous others are all included for your reading "pleasure."

One section of the book includes the list of thugs that met their demise in a violent manner and another section for those who passed from the scene peacefully.

Following the text of the book the author includes a "Cast of Characters" which includes the thugs in the book with a brief description of each. The book concludes with a list of notes for each chapter, a bibliography, and an index which makes the book 266 pages in length. I did find one minor error on page 96 where it is mentioned the job of commissioner of baseball was created in 1922. The correct year should be 1920.

I wouldn't want to be a gangster but I find them fascinating to read about. If you enjoy this aspect of American history you are sure to enjoy this book.

Evil But Never Boring

Why are these degenerates so intriguing? Why is Marc Mappen's book so enjoyable? I have no idea, but they are and it is. Here you will meet not only the celebrated Al Capone and Meyer Lansky, but also Abbadabba Berman and Blue Jaw Magoon. For better or worse, we shall not look upon their like again. Today's merchants of terror are just not colorful.

Mappen, a first-rate scholar, has tunneled through mountains of primary documents and has scoured the secondary sources with a critical eye. Many of the book's stories are contested - the gangsters did a poor job of documenting their activities - but Mappen weighs the available evidence well. For example, there is some mystery about how it came to pass that Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, waiting to testify against Lepke Buchalter and others, plunged to his death through a sixth-floor window while in the protective custody of the NYPD. The canary who could sing but couldn't fly was probably murdered, says Mappen judiciously. His readers learn that the gangsters weren't the only bad guys.

Make no mistake: this is serious history. Mappen takes account of some critical social forces: prohibition, of course, but also immigration, the Great Depression, the explosion of the entertainment industry, the waxing and waning of official corruption, and so on. How about the influence of ethnicity? Well, the crooks were a more diverse group than you might think: lots of Italians, to be sure, but also Irish and a good many Jews.

If you've always considered history boring, this is the book for you. If you love history, this is the book for you.

A slew of low level con men, honed from immigrant neighborhoods, hung on for dear life to a cartel that brought them lots more money than working in a barber shop or lifting boxes in a corner grocery. Historian and scholar Marc Mappen fleshes out the rise of the Irish, Jewish, and Italian boys who built organized crime during the roaring 1920s that outlawed alcohol, only to line the pockets of men who took advantage of America's thirst for booze. Broadway shows, Hollywood movies, and popular literature were all smitten with the style and the gall of the brazen men who lifted machine guns as easily as honest men drove plows or hammered with nails. Mappen gets inside the organizations, conferences and day to day dealings of a generation of mobsters. An Early Dr. Seuss Gem

"A beautiful story of love, honor and scientific achievement" is how Dr. Seuss, with tongue in cheek, describes this book. Touted as Dr. Seuss's first book for adults, The Seven Lady Godivas was originally published in 1939 and reissued in 1987. It tells the story of not one, but seven 11th Century Lady Godivas. They are sisters sworn not to marry their beaus, the seven Peeping brothers (yes, Tom is one of them) until each of them discover a scientific truth about horses. They were driven to this oath by the death of their father during an experiment using a horse as a means of transportation.
The history is confused, but the fun never stops. Dr. Seuss's full page drawings (in red, black and white) illustrate every other page. The end papers are a fanciful illustration of the Godiva family tree. The text, though wordier than his childrens books and not in rhyme, is thoroughly Dr. Seuss. He explains the seven sisters preference for nudity by saying they had brains and were not given to vanity. He goes on to say "they were simply themselves and chose not to disguise it." Although this is a great summation of nudist philosophy, it doesn't say much about his regard for women who choose to wear clothes. Instead of scientific truths we are treated by the author to fanciful origins for seven proverbs about horses as each sister discovers her "horse truth" and goes on to marry her boyfriend.
If you enjoy Dr. Seuss, you will find these drawings and this story delightful. Although described as an adult book, children will enjoy the story as well. Today's young folks may not be familiar with all seven of the horse proverbs that Dr. Seuss relates in a book that is over 60 years old, but it should not deter from their enjoyment of this amusing tale. The drawings are not detailed enough to offend even the youngest of readers.

A must read for any Dr Suess lover over the age of 18; it is truly meant for adults, but not off color in the least. Lets hope the publisher runs another edition for those of us who love an erudite Dr Suess.

An excellent adult fairy tale.

The Seven Lady Godivas, in my opinion, one of the best books ever written by Dr, Seuss. Yes, that's right! Of course, Theodore Gissel has a great appeal to the young at heart, but this book is a HOOT!
