The World At Large: Book 1: Carpe Diem, by Adam Mehaffey

The following is an account of my journeys throughout the world. What started off as a couple of months to get away for an adventure turned into a ten-year journey of learning, enlightenment, hard times, and moments that will never leave me, including times of joy, sorrow, love, pain, near-death experiences, and experiences nearly worth dying for. During that time, I travelled to over 60 countries, set foot on every continent, including Antarctica; worked in over half a dozen countries; and saw relics from ancient civilisations and technological marvels of the modern world. I saw the highest peak on earth, the lowest valley, and so much in between. I visited places where they had never seen a white man before and countries ruled by governances ranging from democracies to theocracies to military regimes. I saw the cruelty that humanity can have for each other as well as the love that can bind us all. I fell in love, had my heart broken a few times, and broke a few hearts of my own. ~Carpe Diem

A fascinating true account of one man's travels that kept me entertained from start to finish
By E.A. Gray
As an avid traveler, I have come to enjoy true tales of adventures during the times I am sedentary. I was referred to this book by a friend who thought I would enjoy it as much as she did. I am happy to say that she was right. I immediately enjoyed the writers direct style of speech; a style that made you feel like he was right in the room telling you tales of his travels. Also, he took the time to delve into and flesh out his accounts with elucidating details and a strong grasp on timing. His travels and travails, placed in this autobiographical account, were lively representations of a life that most would only dream of living.

I was engrossed by many parts of this book as the author moved from Britain and France, all the way to exotic locales like Turkey and Amman. His harrowing tale of an attack in London with his friend John and Rich was intense, and his descriptions of Edinburgh made me long for the cold castle walls and the surrounding pubs of Scotland. Another account I really loved was his run in with “Mother Hen”. This was a humorous situation about a terrible individual, and the way the author dealt with her was just laugh out loud perfect. By the end, even the bittersweet details of his relationship with a particular female and the difficult decisions they made were an honor to hear about.

In summation, I enjoyed this book because the writer’s experiences were so diverse and intriguing. The locales were enjoyable to read about and so many of the people that inhabited his world all possessed the ability to put a mark on your memory. If you’re looking for a wonderful read by a unique writer that will keep you entertained throughout, then I can’t see you doing much better than this book. For me, it was a total pleasure.

Bring on the travel!
By Amazon Customer
I go on at least 2 travel adventures a year and there is little I love more than reading others account of their own travel experience (aside from experiencing my own). What is unique about this one for me is that the traveling is enjoyed all over the world. So, there is this kind of culture exploration that I found especially entertaining. It kind of reads like your sitting down with the author in a pub while he just spills on his experience, giving fun, and vivid accounts of the people. places and things and even a little internal struggle. It is a great read and I highly enjoyed it. The really great part, is that I was offered this read in exchange for my honest opinion and I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated that I would! Now I feel the travel bug and want to reach well outside my norm and head out of the country.

Zumwalt: The Life and Times of Admiral Elmo Russell

“Painstakingly researched and crafted, Larry Berman’s Zumwalt is a compelling and rich portrait of one of the nation’s great patriots.”
—Walter Anderson, former editor and CEO of Parade

Zumwalt is a compelling portrait of the controversial military man who is widely regarded as the founder of the modern U.S. Navy, Admiral Elmo Russell “Bud” Zumwalt. Chief of Naval Operations during the decades-long Cold War crisis, Zumwalt implemented major strategic innovations that endure to this day, especially in his campaign against racism and sexism throughout the fleet. Larry Berman, the author of Perfect Spy, offers a fascinating, detailed look at an extraordinary man—winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom—an inspiring portrait of leadership that is essential in these troubled times.

Fairly or not, few of the top military brass emerged from the Vietnam era with their reputations enhanced. Perhaps the most notable exception was the late Elmo Bud Zumwalt. Berman, professor emeritus at the University of California–Davis, is an unabashed admirer of Zumwalt, and this detailed, complimentary but fair biography shows his subject worthy of that esteem. Zumwalt commanded all U.S. naval forces in Vietnam from 1970 to 1974. Although he harbored serious doubts about the feasibility of military victory in the war, he showed remarkably innovative skills, especially in shifting responsibility to South Vietnamese naval forces as part of the Vietnamization policy. He also earned the admiration of both superiors and subordinates for his constant concern for the welfare of ordinary seamen. Then, as chief of naval operations, Zumwalt carried out dramatic reforms that helped the U.S. meet new Soviet challenges as well as confront embedded racism in the navy. This is a fine tribute to a man of high achievement and character. --Jay Freeman

Review
“A splendid biography of an extraordinary leader who commanded U.S. naval forces in Vietnam and as Chief of Naval Operations dragged the Navy into the twentieth century. The chapter on Zumwalt’s war against the paranoiac secrecy of the Nixon White House is a gem of historical research and analysis.” (George C. Herring, author of America's Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975)

“An engaging and highly readable portrait of one of the Navy’s truly transformative figures and arguably the most innovative and controversial CNOs of the Cold War era.” (Ronald H. Spector, Professor of History and International Affairs, The George Washington University)

“Zumwalt was a visionary whose charismatic brand of leadership was grounded in an unflinching dedication coupled with a belief that barriers to equality and progress have no place in America. This volume is rich with moving details from countless individuals who were inspired by his integrity and courage.” (Thurgood Marshall Jr.)

” Zumwalt was an iconic figure for generations of sailors who served under his command or who were motivated by his example. His dedication to his country and the US Navy was a model for those who want to serve.” (Adm. Mike Mullen, 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff)

“ZUMWALT may be Larry Berman’s best book on Vietnam. Exhaustively researched, beautifully written, here is the war through the prism of one of America’s greatest officers. I loved it and learned from it. Read it.” (Marvin Kalb, Edward R. Murrow Professor Emeritus at Harvard and co-author of Haunting Legacy: Vietnam and the American Presidency from Ford to Obama.)

“Bud Zumwalt was a fearless leader. He was also a fascinating, thoughtful and brilliant sailor. I learned a lot about leadership from him over the years - so will you when you read ZUMWALT.” (Donna E. Shalala)

“This is a fine tribute to a man of high achievement and character.” (Booklist)

You can’t understand today’s Navy without acknowledging Zumwalt’s role in modernizing its technology and renewing its soul. He believed in a Navy worthy of our nation...those who chose to serve in it were deserving of respect and dignity. Zumwalt is the story of a true American hero. (President Bill Clinton)

From the Back Cover

Admiral Elmo Russell Zumwalt, Jr., the charismatic chief of naval operations (CNO) and "the navy's most popular leader since WWII" (Time), was a man who embodied honor, courage, and commitment. In a career spanning forty years, he rose to the top echelon of the U.S. Navy as a commander of all navy forces in Vietnam and then as CNO from 1970 to 1974. His tenure came at a time of scandal and tumult, from the Soviets' challenge to the U.S. for naval supremacy and a duplicitous endgame in Vietnam to Watergate and an admirals' spy ring.

Unlike many other senior naval officers, Zumwalt successfully enacted radical change, including the integration of the most racist branch of the military—an achievement that made him the target of bitter personal recriminations. His fight to modernize a technologically obsolete fleet pitted him against such formidable adversaries as Henry Kissinger and Hyman Rickover. Ultimately, Zumwalt created a more egalitarian navy as well as a smaller modernized fleet better prepared to cope with a changing world.

But Zumwalt's professional success was marred by personal loss, including the unwitting role he played in his son's death from Agent Orange. Retiring from the service in 1974, Zumwalt spearheaded a citizen education and mobilization effort that helped thousands of Vietnam veterans secure reparations. That activism earned him the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Today Zumwalt's tombstone at the U.S. Naval Academy is inscribed with one word: "Reformer." Admiring yet evenhanded, Larry Berman's moving biography reminds us what leadership is and pays tribute to a man whose life reflected the best of America itself.

Father of the Modern Navy
By Dr. Wilson Trivino
Bill Clinton referred to Admiral Elmo Russell "Bud" Zumwalt, Jr. as the "conscious of the Navy" according to author Larry Berman who wrote a book on Zumwalt as spoke about the book with the audience at the Carter Presidential Library on October 9, 2012. President Clinton not only honored Zumwalt with the Medal of Freedom but he also gave the eulogy as a sitting President at his funeral.
Berman resides in Atlanta and is the founding dean of the Honors College at Georgia State University and has written four books. Berman crossed the path of "Bud" Zumwalt as he was working on another project. This book captures the life and times of this unspoken hero.
The book has several interesting parts, in the end with the author research notes has a fascinated tale on how the book almost was never written. Berman had to take his case to court to open the public documents that should have been open to begin with. The Navy and government bureaucracy almost succeeded in squashing the project, fortunately Berman persisted and prevailed.
Another part is the dialogue and interaction with the great late Admiral Hyman Rickover is fascinating. Rickover was known as a tough old bird and a bit of a jerk. The passages about Rickover interviewing Zumwalt are riveting.
Zumwalt also was an advocate for those veterans affected by Agent Orange and his own son Elmo got sick from his exposure. Ironically it was Zumwalt's orders that exposed his son to this chemical. This prompted him to work tireless on the victims behalf and he also help start the national bone marrow donation program. Berman also points to some new evidence that the Reagan administration had a consorted effort to deny the existence of the link between Agent Orange and illness.
According to Berman, Zumwalt was also instrumental in shifting the paradigm of the modern navy where it diversified the higher ranks with women and blacks.
Zumwalt worked in the Nixon white house under Kissinger and ran for United State Senate. His life was full of ups and downs, but through it all he was a honorable man who strived to do the right thing.
In his Medal of Freedom citation it reads "In both wartime and peacetime, Elmo Zumwalt has exemplified the ideal of service to our nation... For his dedication, valor, and compassion, we salute Bud Zumwalt."
This book Zumwalt: The Life and Times of Admiral Elmo Russell "Bud" Zumwalt, Jr by Larry Berman is a fascinating peek into one man's remarkable life and selfless commitment to public service. A good read about a good man.

Bud Zumwalt Was THE Model Admiral
By Argus
Larry Berman's book on Admiral Bud Zumwalt is a fitting tribute to this inspirational USN leader. Zumwalt was not afraid to tell the truth about the USN, especially its long-standing racist policies. He was one of the few USN admirals who was not corrupt, who did the right thing, even when it made him legions of enemies. Zumwalt could not stand the status quo culture of the USN, and he took steps to bring the ship around and back into fighting shape. America needs a lot more admirals like Bud Zumwalt, now more than ever. Compared to the "Yes Men" who have dominated the USN over the years, Zumwalt was a paragon of virtue and both intellectual and physical courage. Zumwalt's story needs to be heard now, even though he died more than ten years ago. Well done, Dr. Berman. Everyone who admired Admiral Zumwalt will surely admire this book.

Bravo Zulu
By ollb
I regret that I have to give this book only four stars rather than the five it otherwise deserves, because it places textual material that should have been on-the-page footnotes into reader-hostile endnotes - 49 pages of them. It is a well done bio of a rather neglected personality. The preliminary chapters on Zumwalt's early life, family background, and early naval career contained much that I did not know.

I think the author falls a bit short in coverage of the opposition to Zumwalt and his policies. For a full appreciation of the resistance and the post-Zumwalt reaction/rollback, maybe you had to be there. I was. Memory: Master Chief of the Atlantic Fleet, when asked what his boss (ADM Isaac Kidd) thought about beards - "He hates `em with a passion." Memory: sister of CAPT Robin Quigley (Director of the Waves) discoursing at a dinner party about how her whole family despised Zumwalt and had rejoiced at his defeat for the Senate. Memory: a captain, chief of staff at a naval base, addressing a group of maybe 50 master and senior chiefs a couple months before Zumwalt's exit; he declared that he disliked beards and hoped to see them banned when Zumwalt left. Then, intermingled among various other criticisms of Zumwalt's policies, three times: "Now, I support Admiral Zumwalt." Memory, about a year after Zumwalt's departure: one of my petty officers came in half an hour late and explained - he had left home in civvies, intending to change to dungarees on the ship. He had stopped by the dispensary to refill a family prescription. New policy. Uniform of the day only. He had had to return home and start over.

I find it surprising and a bit puzzling that the author seems to have made no use of the weekly Navy Times and its coverage of such matters, and that he makes no mention of Hanson Baldwin's early 1974 hatchet job (in the Saturday Evening Post and Reader's Digest) on Zumwalt and his policies. He also seems unaware of RAFT - the Racial Awareness Facilitator Training program ordered by Zumwalt in late 1973 - and of how Zumwalt finally integrated the Steward rating: by eliminating it, by merging it with the largely-white Commissaryman (cook) rating.

Subsequent chapters covering within-government bickering (Rickover, Kissinger, Nixon, and others) were of less interest (to me), although I recognize that others will surely find them fascinating.

A still-unsolved mystery is whatever took place between Zumwalt and ADM Moorer in the months just before Zumwalt took over. Moorer legalized beards just before the change. Did Zumwalt ask him to do so? Did Zumwalt foresee the furor that beards, in particular, would arouse; did he perhaps want to preserve a bit of deniability? In Z-gram 57 he refers to "my predecessor's guidance" concerning facial hair.

The author concludes with a lengthy "Research Note" detailing his difficulties in obtaining materials from the Naval History and Heritage Command. This does not surprise me. I sense that the Navy would prefer to erase Zumwalt's reform efforts from its institutional memory while still honoring the man himself, making Zumwalt just another name in a list of flawless CNOs. The author made use of a few of the U.S. Naval Institute's oral histories. A full perusal of these would be likely to produce many instances and examples of recalcitrance and obstructionism. But these histories cannot be accessed on the internet, or searched. They can only be ordered in transcript at $75 - and that's $75 each. ($45 in DVD.) There are well over 200 of them. Thereby full access is priced out of the range of the merely curious. Only once in a while does the curtain lift.

I found it significant that even in the new century the lingering opposition was still potent enough to (almost) force the renaming of the Zumwalt-class destroyers.

Stalemate - The Biographies (The Red Gambit Series), by Colin Gee

This is not the book, but a set of biographies designed to complementhe book itself. It is not a stand-alone item. The third in the 'Red Gambit' series, Stalemate deals with the events of the Third World War, up to 25th October 1945. Relating the experiences from both sides of the divide, and from all levels. 'Stalemate' deals with the man in the trench, through the pilot in his fighter, through to the Generals who direct the war from their command centres. 'Stalemate' brings the first stages of WW3 to a climax on the Alsatian plain, a sleepy town in Holland, and an insignificant town in Germany, whose name is now synonymous with death on a grand scale. [The ‘Red Gambit Series’ novels are works of fiction, and deal with fictional events. Most of the characters therein are a figment of the author’s imagination. Without exception, those characters that are historical figures of fact or based upon historical figures of fact are used fictitiously, and their actions, demeanour, conversations, and characters are similarly all figments of the author’s imagination.]

Status Fans,

I wanted to personally thank all of you foryour support. The comments have been overwhelmingly positive and I am happy to hearthat Statushas hadsuch a powerful impact on readers of all ages. When I first took on Status, I really wanted to dig deep into the real-life threats of the internet. It struck me that technology was not the bad guy, but the people who misused it were.

If you enjoyed Status, stay tuned for more great titles.

Awesome concept and a truly unique read!
By T.A.
This book was a delight to read. And by delight I mean I was on the edge of my seat, slightly uncomfortable, and could not stop reading. I haven’t read anything like it and was amazed by the creativity of Annunziato. The premise of Status the Game is awesome. I loved how players became addicted to it like a drug and they would keep going no matter the consequences. It is scary how portending of our future the whole concept is (if we aren’t careful). The details Annunziato shares about the game are quite elaborate, well thought out, and really bring you into that virtual world. The characters were colorful and interesting, and I especially loved the Principal Reed character. The setting of high school worked well for the story because HS is such a time of angst and social challenges. These things are magnified by the fact that everyone is playing Status. It is a game that allows humans to be the worst and most materialistic versions of themselves in this anonymous (but not so anonymous) way. Every one is leading a double life and the line between real life and virtual life in the game is blurred.
I liked the underlying theme of evolution in the book where the concept of survival of the fittest has been totally redefined by Status. I also love how the book is structured with most of it being told through Bob, the protagonist, but interspersed with mysterious inner thought from him in the future, and also with the rules of the Game, which made it all the more real.
This is a unique story, a fast and exciting read, and a book that really makes you think. I highly recommend. Can’t wait to read the next one!

Stay Strong, Stay Loyal!
By Arya D.
Okay so this book took me so long to read it! Usually thats a negative for me when reading fiction. I can usually fly through a book and have a book this size done before the day is over. However , I spent so much time just thinking about this book and was putting it down every few minutes and try to guess what would happen. The game Status was so realistic and terrifying because it was so real.

Status would be a perfect book for any gamer . The development of the game and the inclusion of the rules for the game brought it to life.I am a big fan of RPG games and I think all gamers have thought about their favorite game meshing with their “real” life. After reading Status I think everyone will rethink wanting that for sure. Status and the concept of a game that can dictate your life was such a unique concept. We as a group of people are so connected to each other through the internet and the privacy of the past is so gone now that something like Status is so possible and that it scary.

Bob who is our main character was kinda hard to connect with. Through most of the book i had a hard time caring about him and what was happening to him. The other characters and their perspective was a lot more action packed and intriguing to me. The further we got into the story I started to like Bob more but I never fully felt committed towards him like I did the other characters. He felt more like a tool to get us into the world.

I love the secondary characters in this book. They were so well developed and their stories took over the book for me! I was really drawn in and my sympathy and feelings shifted back and forth and it was great. It was just one big mystery . You didn’t know who was playing Status and where their alliances really stood. I had so much fun coming up with theories and plot twists in my head and trying to figure out how this was going to end. P.S. I was completely wrong.

I don’t think I have read a book that involves so many story lines that intertwined as well as this one. Everything just wrapped up nicely at the end and it was really impressive. My only complaint is towards the end. I was unsure how Bob helped at the end. He was suppose to do something major and I am not quite sure what he did or how he did it and I am pretty curious about that!

The way the book ended was really interesting. It was really mysterious and left it in a very interesting way setting up a future book really nicely and I am excited to see how the world of Status and the players will be when this series continues.

I would for sure recommend this book to everyone it ended up being a lot of fun and exciting. I would really recommend it especially to teens and lovers of YA.

Stay Strong. Stay Loyal
By Lauren Carroll
I don't usually accept review requests from indie/self-published authors, but like I always say - there are exceptions to every rule, and if something grabs my attention I will read it regardless of who wrote it or where it was published. It was my pleasure to get speaking to Vincent Robert Annunziato on Goodreads about his debut novel Status: The Game, and decided that I REALLY wanted to read it.....so I did :) Infact, I was so keen to read this that I actually borrowed a Kindle to download the ebook version - and ANYONE who knows me will know how much I despise ebooks!!

The story focuses on a guy named Bob. Bob works in temporary teaching positions, his income is not steady, love-life non-existent, finances not promising...he's basically just winging his miserable way through life. Bob is a keen gamer, so is obviously interested when he comes across a new MMORPG called 'Status'. The aim of the game is to link all of your social media profiles and by navigating the online world with your avatar you gain Status points, which eventually lead to bonuses, upgrades and the possibility of real-life fortunes if you do well within the game. Everything you do, everything you say, everything you buy, the people you speak to, the places you go - all of these things can generate and destroy Status points...and within the game, points are EVERYTHING.

Bob decides to maximise this opportunity and combine it with his newest teaching job at a well-established and high-achieving high school. His plan is simple, teach the kids how to play Status, get them to help him gain points, and ultimately result in lots of money and power falling his way. Little does he know - the kids are already playing Status...and they are SO much better at it than him. But things are going too far. The students are taking Status WAY beyond the game. In the already-ruthless social environment that is high-school, people are being pubically humiliated, manipulated and lives are being destroyed - all in the name of points....all in the name of Status.

Bob, with high hopes of a bright future based on Status, unwittingly stumbles into a dangerous and complicated world that could just ruin his life forever.

I loved the idea of Status. The game is so interesting and unique. I enjoyed all of the little aspects to the game, such as if you buy something for your avatar in Status, you receive the same product in real-life too. There are lots of tiny little details that make up the bigger picture and I loved throwing myself into that. The idea is almost dystopian...but based within our own world. Society as we have it now, is massively influenced by social media and a situation like the one presented in this book is actually not that far from becoming reality. That is what is so unnerving about the entire concept.

The writing was great. Each chapter starts with a different rule from the game, which ties in nicely with the following scenes. This helps you learn about how Status works without bombarding you with TMI all at once. We also begin each chapter with some afterthoughts from Bob, which provide eerie foreshadowing that this is not going to end well.

I will say that the book started off quite slowly, it takes a while to get going. Even though it's not the most action-packed of narratives - something....just something grips you, and keeps you turning the pages desperate to see what happens next. The tension builds slowly and Vincent does a fantastic job of drawing you into this dangerous world that Bob so naively stumbled into. And just lemme tell you guys - you will NEVER be so excited and anxious during a football game as you are during the pivotal one which begins the climax of this book (that's all I'm saying on that...)

I adored how well the characters were developed in this story. Backstories can sometimes become frustrating when you just want to push forward with the action, but through these we get to learn so much about what motivates each character to act the way that they do.

Let's talk about Bob for a second shall we? I didn't relate to him or like him much right from the start. His motivations appear selfish, immature, naive and idealistic - he has his head in the clouds. Bob is a dreamer. I was worried that I couldn't connect with Bob. How was I supposed to follow a story with him if I didn't like him? I had no need for concern though.....this book becomes about so much MORE than Bob. He is just the entryway into the crazy, crazy world that we become a part of. You will fall in love with Donny, Jenny and Hauser, be wary and intimidated by Timmy and Charlotte, freaked out and baffled by Reed, and the abundance of other characters add even more delicious and complicated richness to the fold. You never know who is playing Status and you WILL become suspicious of everyone's actions and motives.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I feel as though I haven't said enough in this review, but I honestly can't say too much because I don't want to spoil anything for you. Right from the tense start, the dangerous build-up and the amazing football game, through to the tragic yet almost inevitable ending....this has been a book that I struggled to put down and it left me feeling very unsettled and full of life ponderings long after I finished it.

Status: The Game shows the true impact that popularity and status, mixed with the vast online world of gaming and social media can have on our society if taken into the wrong hands. It acts as a cautionary tale of sorts, whilst being a very good read along the way. I 100% recommend this book. It's definitely worth picking up. Because of how much I was drawn into the story, and how it made me feel...I can't give it anything other than full marks.

Escape to Manila: From Nazi Tyranny to Japanese Terror, by Frank Ephraim

With the rise of Nazism in the 1930s more than a thousand European Jews sought refuge in the Philippines, joining the small Jewish population of Manila. When the Japanese invaded the islands in 1941, the peaceful existence of the barely settled Jews filled with the kinds of uncertainties and oppression they thought they had left behind. _x000B__x000B_In this book Frank Ephraim, who fled to Manila with his parents, gathers the testimonies of thirty-six refugees, who describe the difficult journey to Manila, the lives they built there upon their arrival, and the events surrounding the Japanese invasion. Combining these accounts with historical and archival records, Manila newspapers, and U.S. government documents, Ephraim constructs a detailed account of this little-known chapter of world history.

Review
"Ephraim has constructed a fascinating narrative from a rich mix of archival research, oral history, and autobiographical memoir. Mixture of history and first-person stories...
By Michael Valdivielso
In this book Mr. Frank Ephraim not only tells us about the history of "Manilaners", Jews who fled Europe and headed to the Philippines, but also tells us about the Jewish community already there. His book is detailed, with both the facts of history AND the emotions and actions of the people themselves. We never feel that the Jews, Filipinos, Americans and Japanese are faceless puppets.
He starts off giving us a very complete history of the Philippines, then focusing on Europe and the problems that Jews had living under the growing power of the Third Reich. Soon we are following the resourceful refugees to Manila. We watch them start a new life, with the help of those around them, showing us the support and empathy that the Jews and Filipinos had for the newcomers.
Then the Japanese invaded and he shows us how everyone came even closer together, doing everything to live a normal life. We learn about daily life, the struggle for food and trying to understand how to deal with the Japanese while they also deal with the big long term problems, like trying to find schools for their children and continuing their form of worship under the paranoid eyes of the Japanese.
Of course, the book ends with the American invasion, the bloody fight for Manila and the aftermath. The author does nothing to hide the tragic results of the battle or the fact that even when peace came the Jews still had problems just making ends meet.
This is a book for anybody into Asian history, Jewish history, the history of the Philippines, World War Two and Japanese history. A must for any history library, really, touching on many subjects.

Great History, even with errors
By Robert Hansen
I have been collecting books of this genre - Manila during the Japanese occupation and subsequent liberation for a number of years and was pleased to add this to my collection. My mother's family was in Manila and like the author they suffered and struggled. To the reviewer who noted that he doesn't care since he doesn't know the people, I say "so what" -- I don't give his review any credibility. One does not read books of this genre and expect to know the people involved. However, as one reviewer has already pointed out, the author made the egregious error of referring to the "Jesuits" at DeLaSalle. My grandfather was president of the DeLaSalle Alumni Association in 1944-45, all of my Uncles attended DeLaSalle and were the author's classmates. To link Jesuits to De La Salle totally negates the credibility of the book in it's entirety to any De La Salle or Ateneo (the Jesuit School)alumni. I am giving it three stars because of the subject but this book should have been edited for accuracy before publication.

Intriguing Stories Of Escape
By John P. Rooney
"Escape To Manila" by Frank Ephraim. Subtitled "From Nazi Tyranny To Japanese Terror". University of Illinois Press, 2003.

This is a collection of intriguing stories, documenting the escape of many different Jewish people, families and individuals, from the impending Holocaust in Nazi dominated Europe. One of the escapees is the author, Frank Ephraim, who has done a great deal of research on how and when the individual escapees reached Manila, The Philippines, and their fate when the Japanese were forced out.

Each of the intriguing stories has its own chronology: some Jews escaped in the early 1930s, when the promulgation of the Nuremberg Laws painted a dark picture of their future, while others did not leave until the September 1st 1939 Nazi invasion of Poland. These necessarily different chronologies can be confusing as you read this interesting book. Further, the author insists giving the date of the Pearl Harbor attack as December 8th, I.e. Manila time, as the Philippines are on the other side of the International Dateline. Of particular interest to me was the story of the young man who flew from Europe to the ends of Asia (Shanghai) in a German JU52. He was the only passenger. That kind of trip was rare enough at that time, but for a Jew who was escaping it was audacious. Further, the author completes the story, through enough research, to track down what happened to that aircraft after Pearl Harbor.

The author's research has some flaws, however. On page 73 he mentions the Catholic De La Salle College", which he attended on Taft Avenue in Manila. He states that the College was staffed by "... Jesuit brothers". This is in error. De La Salle College was begun and staffed by the Christian Brothers De La Salle, an order of teaching brothers begun by St. John Baptist De La Salle(1651-1719) in Reims, France. The Jesuits do have brothers, but they were begun by St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556). When I checked the notes in the back of the book, the reference to the college and the Jesuits brothers was based upon "personal recollection". In my Historiography classes, my professor warned me against depending solely on personal recollection or personal memory. So, I went to the web site for De La Salle College (now University) and that confirmed that it was the Christian Brothers De La Salle. By the way, the Japanese massacred fifteen of the Brothers in the last days of the occupation. As a graduate of Manhattan College, begun by the Christian Brothers De La Sale in 1853, I am, perhaps, oversensitive to any slight, intended or unintended, to them.

Review
"Clearly lays out the vast diversity of transformative programs available to any student while also providing an essential compass, and makes a compelling case on how this legitimate educational supplement could soon become an educational imperative."
?Alex Safos, director, Global Learning Across Borders

"With a thorough directory of organizations, an explanation of the financial picture, comments from top college admissions directors, and an objective perspective, Kristin M. White has created the number one gap year resource."
?Chris Stakich, co-founder and executive director, Thinking Beyond Borders

"A good choice for students with the means and broad perspective necessary to consider this experience." (Library Journal, February 2010)

"Whatever your motivation, if you are interested in pursuing a gap year experience, do your research. And I'd start by reading White's book." (CBS MoneyWatch.com, The College Solution)

"This guide'sbest feature is itsclear and detailed organization by subject interest. If a marine life program is calling out to a teen, it is easy to find options and related subjects close by. Though the "gap year"is a relatively new concept in the United States, it is quite common in Europe and Australia. The directories of volunteer and for-credit gap year programs are pure gold. An index and resource list are included." (School Library Journal, "Choosing the Right College" January 27, 2010)

A Good Introduction to Gap Year Programs
By Kristine I. Hintz
Kristin White's book is a good introduction to gap year programs. It offers great discussion of why and how to do a program, how to pay for it, and a full directory of different categories of programs.

This book is a user-friendly start to the process of identifying the menu of gap programs out there. Many students interested in gap programs simply go on the internet, which provides no complete directory or third-party discussion. This book is a great guidebook to help "jumpstart" the gap year program search.

I gave this program a 4 instead of a 5 because it could have gone a step further beyond simply identifying programs under different headings. There could have been more of an objective review process, explaining why each program might be appropriate for a certain kind of young person with a certain set of goals. There could have been comparisons between programs that on the surface appear almost identical. There could have been some due dilligence, pros and cons, what to watch out for, rewards and frustrations that have been experienced by students who enrolled in each program.

But as an introduction, especially with the lack of guidebooks available, the book serves a market need. Hopefully Ms. White will come out with a more in-depth guide in the future!

Must-Have Gap Year Guide
By Emily Glickman
As an educational consultant who advises Manhattan high school students, I am very glad to have read Kristin White's The Complete Guide to the Gap Year. While taking a gap year is common in Great Britain, many Americans are not familiar with this option. White explains what everyone considering a gap year needs to know: how the gap year factors into college admissions, how to pay for it, where to go and what to do. This is a very useful guide.

Incomplete, but a good start
By Amy
Kristin's guide covers some much-needed advising in this area, such as:

-- the growing trend of college admissions offices understanding the gap year as age-appropriate for students, this isn't about being "bad" or "undermotivated" necessarily
-- an (incomplete) directory of the kinds of programs out there and how to assess a program
-- how gap years can and cannot be written off for tax purposes.

However, there are some significant gaps here:

-- Kristin glides over issues surrounding the enrollment deposit.... it could be unethical for a student to submit an enrollment deposit to secure their place in the incoming class only to say "No thank you, I'd rather be volunteering in Costa Rica." She also doesn't discuss possible disadvantages to taking a year off, particularly taking a year off and reapplying to colleges.

-- She makes volunteering in a foreign country sound like a ski trip in Colorado. There are SERIOUS issues with any kind of international travel, particularly "let's play doctor on poor people" programs that tend to absorb teens and college students. She doesn't have to cover all of these issues, but she should point out they exist and recommend where readers can find resources.

-- She doesn't talk about rights students have when they travel. Do students have a right to retain their passport? If they get sick, do they have a right to choose their hospital? Can you sue in another country the way you can sue in the US? If you can't answer these questions in the book, where could I find these answers?

NMS Surgery Casebook (National Medical Series for Independent Study)From Lippincott

Designed as a companion volume to the popular NMS Surgery, this newly conceptualized casebook presents a series format of surgical cases that begin with a clinical scenario and go through the decision-making process of patient management step-by-step. Chapter contents are parallel to other surgical texts, yet are organized and closely cross-referenced to NMS Surgery. The book visually corresponds to the NMS text, too, and contains 205 line drawings and 115 tables. This new complementary casebook offers medical students a structured subject review, practice questions, and an opportunity to work through clinical cases.

A Great Surgery Review
By A Customer
This is as near perfect a surgery review text as you can find that will prepare you for both your third year surgery clerkship and NBME surgery subject exam and Step 2. This book is very quick reading and is FULL of tons of great diagrams, charts, CT, X-rays, U/S, angiograms, etc. It's written in a clinical cases format with specific and pertinent management questions and solutions, as well as differentials and diagnosing discussions, that will prepare you clinically for the wards, as well as prepare you for shelf exams (which contain a lot of patient management questions, many of which were discussed in this book). It also has enough anatomy and pathophysiology discussion for it to be useful as a source for background reading for surgeries you are planning on scrubbing in on. The radiographic images are especially useful, however, it would have been useful to have more diagnostic findings specifically labelled on many of the images. Most importantly, this is a book that you can realistically expect to finish and even master within the timeframe of your 8-12 week clerkship. Highly recommended.

Don't get overly excited!
By William
I was ecstatic at trying this book after seeing the reviews. I read it twice, and I honestly admit that it is an excellent source. It is very clinically oriented and presents each case in a clinical vignette that has a number of questions that follow. The questions are organized enough to help students understand decision making in surgery. On the shelf examination I estimate that 30-40% end the question with "what would be your next step." This book helped me tackle these questions the best that I could. However, the problem comes up when people say that this book is all that and a bag of potatoes. Still 60-70% of the question I had were not management questions. They dealt with diagnosis and complications of diseases, and this is where the book falls short. NMS casefiles does a fair job of covering these topics, but it is by no means comprehensive enough to get you in the 99th percentile. In fact, the case files format often makes it difficult to compare conditions clearly (e.g. cholangitis vs. cholecystitis) and the differences in management conditions. At the end of this book, you may have some difficultly delineating where one diagnosis ends and the other starts. I relate this mostly to the lack of good diagrams and tables that would allow clear contrast between items. Rather, most everything is contained in the text. In retrospect, I wish that I would have selected a source like First Aid or Blueprints to read through before doing this book. I don't think that I needed to background to understand this book, but it would have at least laid out complications of diseases and clear contrasts between conditions that are a little hazy in this book.

Excellent book for shelf exam and surgery rotation.
By Cyrus K. Manavi
I just finished my surgery rotation and took the shelf exam. I have to say that reading this book really prepared me for the shelf and also for the whole surgery rotation. I highly recommend this book. You may also want to have a question book such as pre-test surgery to do some practice questions.

Good luck in surgery.
