About the Author
Donatella Melucci was born and raised in Italy. She earned her Laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere from the University of Bari, Italy, and received a doctorate in English Rhetoric/Composition & Linguistics from Arizona State University where she taught for many years. She is now a Visiting Assistant Professor at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Her field of specialization is methodologies for teaching Italian as a second/foreign language. Her studies have also focused on the use of technology in foreign language classes.

Elissa Tognozzi (Ph.D. Italian, UCLA) is Senior Lecturer (SOE) in the Department of Italian at UCLA. As Director of Italian Language Studies, she teaches graduate seminars in methods and in technology, coordinates the language program, and supervises the department's teaching assistants. Her upper-division courses include advanced composition, culture, opera, and theater. In addition, she is undergraduate advisor. From 2003 to 2008, she was chair of the AP Italian Development Committee. She was editor of the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) newsletter and is currently the elected representative for AATI for California.

NO ONLINE ACCESS

It says it comes with access to the online material but don't believe them unless you speak to someone. So frustrating, starting off the quarter behind in my class.

The online component is clearly rushed. The answer key is embarrassingly rife with errors. It feels sloppily edited, as if nobody bothered to go through and carefully make sure that the answers to the exercises were correct. The problem starts around the middle of the book and only gets worse from there. I've often had to figure out which incorrect answer the key wants me to put (instead of the one that I know is correct) in order to earn points. The sheer quantity of the errors really harms the learning experience.

In addition, even for some of the exercises that don't have mistakes in the answer key, the design and instructions for the exercises are laughable. One exercise was a fill-in-the-blank where it asked to "conjugate the verb with the right tense" with absolutely no context clues in the sentence to tell us what tense we were supposed to use. Another exercise on pronouns asked us to answer the question "did you see (male name) and (female name)?" It prompted us with "no, (other male name)," so I answered "I didn't see THEM, but I saw (other male name)." That was marked as incorrect, and the answer was given as "I didn't see HER, but I saw (other male name)," even though I was prompted to indicate that I didn't see EITHER of the people originally mentioned but another guy entirely.

If you decide to buy this textbook, beware of the online component. If you're an instructor, allow students to see the answer key. It's better to have a few lazy students copy and paste the answers (they're only hurting themselves, ultimately) than to punish hardworking students for the online component's mistakes.

Good concept but needs better developement

Lots of information here, sometimes difficult to find. The idea of the piazza as the cultural center of Italy is great, but it could have a better tie-in. The accompanying on-line materials are not easy to navigate, either. I feel like the publisher is trying to make a magazine-style textbook with a website learning tool, but is not very accomplished at either.The choice of information is appropriate, but I doubt that I'd ever be able to utilize it on my own. Fortunately, I'm using the text in a face-to-face class and the excellent teacher of the course is able to help us wade through and make sense of the information provided.

Zeckendorf pioneered the way for many real estate transactions that are now common. What he did with parcelling out the Empire State Building is a fantastic thing to read about. The book is a great read. I'm trying to copy much of his philosophy. Hey if a baker can bake the same piece of bread in NYC as he can in Denver, CO, I should hit paydirt! I'm a small-time Realtor compared to Zeckendorf. This autobiography deals straight with the man and how his mind functioned so he could become incredibly wealthy. And he worked hard AND smart during his career. This book will make you think. You will get understanding in the game of negotiating. You will learn how to pick the right friends and business associates. You will learn lots and lots of stuff that will help you in your real estate career.

Colourful writing by a colourful character

This little book provides a very personal and sometimes colourful account of the chronicles of the rise and fall of Webb & Knapp, with particular emphasis on Zeckendorf's companies role in the early years of urban redevelopment. Some extracts:
- On travelling: "We travelled in high style in a chaffeur-driven car through France, across Switzerland, and down to Italy, sampling wines, museums, cathedrals and vistas" (p.25)
- On socializing: "...the Rocky Mountain News gleefully produced a picture of me a la cowboy and some of the wedding guests al fresco" (p.130)
- On leverage: "I was often in debt, sometimes little more than two jumps ahead of the sheriff, and forever scrambling for some way to turn an extra dollar. Whenever I did get a little money ahead, I tried to put it to work" (p.32)
- On ideas: "That night I could hardly sleep as I chased my own ideas, tied them down with facts and figures, altered them, made compromises, returned to original notions, and finally realized I was no dealing with fantasy but with genuine possibility" (p.66)
- On testosterone: "...with our great, masculine building standing up against the Montreal skyline like a man surrounded by boys..." (p.195)
- On attitude: "We hereby offer to the UN approximately 17 acres...for any price they wish to pay" (p.69)

A fascinating man...

Not since the days of the Louisiana Purchase has America seen any bigger real estate transactions than those executed by William Zeckendorf, the derring-do head of Webb & Knapp. Figuring with supersonic speed and an uncanny flair for making money, the flamboyant impressario bought and sold property, remodeled whole sections of New York, Denver, Washington, Montreal and Dallas, and moved the UN, the capital of the world, to New York. At the peak of his power, he was a man with the Midas touch in an age of computers.

He played a real life game of Monopoly and won the largest real estate empire in the world...so large, in fact, that Wall Street tottered when he went bankrupt. And bankrupt he was, but never in spirit.

An autobiography bursting with vitality, enthusiasm, and financial know-how, he reveals himself as a visionary whose creativeness and sense of adventure are matched only by his unalloyed joy at being able to successfully juggle a dozen incredibly complicated transactions at once.

Zeckendorf's grandfather was a German immigrant and Indian trader who, in 1868, established a store in Tucson, Arizona (Steindorf's). William was born in Paris, Illinois, in 1905.

A great read AND an improved me.

Having never fully subscribed to self help books (the concepts are often a bit too fluffy for my scientific brain), I was pleasantly surprised with The Winner's Bible. In fact, the chatty style meant I hardly even registered that I was reading a self help book. It was easy to breeze through the pages and the diverse vignettes peppered throughout mostly added another layer to the thought process whilst allowing time to mentally digest the previous chapter.

Fortunately this easy-to-read style did not mask a lack of substance. The neuroscience background of the author means the book has scientific grounding, but it is not at all like reading some dry scientific paper. In fact, Dr Spackman has managed to expertly pitch The Winner's Bible at everyday people and manages that fine balance between being overly simplistic and therefore condescending and being too technical.

I would recommend using the website in addition to the book for some of the tools to create your personal winners bible. The website provides the structural skeleton, whereas the book provides and provokes the thoughts. However, by far the best feature of the website is the online audit. This allows your friends, family and colleagues to give anonymous feedback on how you are viewed by others - an enlightening process, if not a slightly scary concept. But as I keep telling myself, you can't fix what you don't know is broken!

On a personal level, I feel better equipped with confidence and self belief to face upcoming challenges thanks to The Winner's Bible. It was the positive changes brought about in me by The Winner's Bible that inspired me to submit this review. A world of better people would be a more stimulating and exciting place to live!

On the website, I see that the author is planning future books, which if they build on concepts in the current book should be another layer of interesting reading.

Tired of getting to the end of another self help book and wondering where to start?
The Winners's Bible provides the tools that create permanent change.

I bought the book on July 14th 2009 though Amazon after a friend "linked me" to The Winner's Bible website.
I listened to world class athletes describe personal changes in their lives that were brought about after applying Dr Spackmans techniques and tools, and I figured if they (people who have tried everything) got results then why not me?

Anyway - about the book.

Only start this read if you've got time...not to put it down. The author writes in such a way that anyone can understand the princples. Unlike some books that I have read this one doesn't require a thesaurus.
Dr Spackman will help you understand how and why you've failed to make changes in the past. He provides practical solutions and tools, that if applied consistantly, will create permanent changes in the future.

The key for me is that this book makes it personal. No one else has the exact same issues as I do. The personal bible you create provides you with a "visual stimlulator" that really only helps one person - you. I now have a clear picture of where I am going and what personally "drives me". My energy levels have ripped to new levels because I am focused on what really matters to me. Reprogramming my automatic reponses is something I didn't know I could do before reading this book. It is crazy to think of the time and effort I have wasted in the past with books that just don't work.

I've had to apply myself; creating change requires work. If you really want to change the direction you are heading in life, if you want to be a winner, this book will help you create solutions.

If you want to regain control, then get a copy. The proof is in the pudding!!

Winner's Bible rewires and supercharges

Having read dozens of self-help and performance psychology books during my time in competitive sport, I was delighted by the contrast between The Winner's Bible and the standard neuroscience texts or pop-psychology self help books. The work is a nuts and bolts 'how to' practical guide to changing the way you go about achieving your ambitions. I read the book 6 weeks ago and followed the process - As a result I am reaping the rewards of being laser-focused, energised and the people around me have noticed a permanent change.

I highly recommend the book to anyone wanting to make a step change in their life. This stuff just works.

Linden and Emma Paroli, who each have children born prematurely, have joined forces with Mia Weschler Doron, a physician whose specialty is neonatology, to produce the book they wish had been available to them when they needed it. The authors cover myriad issues, ranging from a discussion of risk factors for prematurity, through possible and probable problems in the newborn's life and early years, to long-term prognoses. They do this primarily in a question-and-answer format, with lots of accompanying information. Their book should handsomely meet the needs of families dealing with premature infants and in fact is certain to be a blessing to them. A must-have for parents of preemies

What a great book! It has answered all the questions my husband and I have had about our premature baby. All the information is practical and straightforward without being negative or intimidating. The book is organized in chronological order, from before birth to bringing your baby home and beyond. It also includes useful resources for parents. We wish the book had been published when our preemie was born, but we're still finding it an invaluable resource today.

1st Time Mom of a 32wk Preemie

I can't say enough about this book! What a help it has been for keeping my sanity and getting me through one of the most difficult times in my life. I was admitted to the hospital with premature labor at 20 weeks into my pregnancy. I stayed there for 3 months before delivering our son at the gestational age of 32 weeks, 4 days. Not knowing when I was actually going to deliver, this book explained everything one should expect at all stages of a pre-term delivery, beginning from 26 weeks through 34+ weeks. It covers reasons for premature labor and delivery, surgeries and drugs administered for premature labor, surviving bedrest/hospitalization, delivery, EVERYTHING to expect in a NICU, the differences between pre-term and full-term babies, bringing your preemie home, and their development during the chilhood years. Although I was not having twins, etc. myself, the book also includes a lot of great information on multiples. After reading and understanding the types of monitors and machinery my baby may have needed at each stage, I felt much better knowing WHY these things were attached to our son when he was born. My husband and I also took a tour of the NICU at our hospital (which I highly recommend!)so that it was much less of a shock when we found ourselves there after delivery. This book was right on the money, and we got to see everything they talked about hands-on. This is an excellent book to help anyone conquer the fears, worries and misconceptions of having a premature infant (and it also comes highly recommended from the nurses and neonatologists of our NICU as well!)

Masterful research and historical storytelling

I thought I had already written a review for this fine book, but then I went back to read it a second time and had to check. The elements of historical accuracy are what propels this novel beyond the average storytelling of a age. Questions many of us history buffs wanted answered were given life by Fedan as he put history. and a story, about the Templars into our hands and minds. Add to this the richness of the research into the 12th and 13th centuries, and the development of a fictional tale that tied it all together , then you have a book that scholars of the time, history buffs, and readers who just like a compelling story cannot put down. I loved the intrigue, the subject matter, and most of all-the characters I did not want to let go. We follow 'pure of heart' William as he takes on the dangers and demons of the age and becomes a warrior for God. We follow the historical figure of Lord Grandson, whom I had never heard of before, as he has his hands pulling the strings of history to make events happen that do not reflect the desires of famous and powerful people.. This book is responsible for opening new doors of historical interest as the author pulls his own literary strings to engage the reader until the very end. This is a five star product and a five star writer. Highly recommend a second reading for all the golden tidbits missed the first time.

The REAL quest for the Holy Grail

I have a great deal of personal knowledge about this subject matter from decades of research into my family connections to the Templars and their flight to Scotland after King Phillip's persecution. This book was simply excellent in every detail about the time period, the weaponry, the clothing, the methods of warfare, the geography, even the horses! I learned a lot of new information from the author, Mr. Fedan, and I recommend this book as a must-read for anyone interested in the Templar Knights and their battles in the Holy Land and Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries.

This book also reveals the REAL nature of the inner circle of the Templar Brotherhood's existence: The Knowing. The DaVinci Code only scratched the surface of the quest for the Holy Grail. Yes, it's very possible that an actual bloodline was part of the legend, but as anyone who has ever read The Gnostic Gospels or the Nag Hammadi documents knows, *Gnosis* is the core "secret" and the true treasure that The Brotherhood protected with their lives.

One small criticism I might make about this novel is the sometimes jarring use of modern vernacular, but that in no way kept me from enjoying the story and scholarship of this book.

I'd recommend this very highly as a riveting adventure and highly informative in the bargain.

THE GIFT OF FLIGHT

This is the program that changed my life ! Excellent research and professional practice by Captain Tom Bunn, pilot and psychotherapist (who else can claim that ?) has resulted in an easy to understand method for retraining your brain. Unlike some phobias, fear of flying can be a compilation of multiple fears and anxieties. A comprehensive treatment approach is the best way to go on this one. I had not flown for 12 years and before that had flown with terror and severe panic attacks. No pleasure was to be had. I missed out on so many important experiences. Last month I took my first flight and was elated with the result. No Panic Attacks !! I successfully navigated the whole experience using everything I had learned and practiced. I can't wait to fly again. The strengthening exercise is a powerful tool. This wonderful book has all the information that the course has and refutes every argument you have about why it won't work for you. If Neuroscience, Aerodynamics and Psychology got married and had a child, it would be named, "Freedom to Fly" and you can thank Captain Tom Bunn for walking them down the aisle !

Not a miracle but it helps

I am a really nervous flyer. I've been known to cry when there is turbulence and just flat out avoid trips if it means I need to get on an airplane. I couldn't avoid it forever though and in preparation I read this book. It had so many good reviews so I figured it couldn't hurt. It's not a miracle, I still hate to fly and I still hate turbulence, but I didn't cry once even during extremely bumpy flights. While I could see the relaxation techniques helping some people, for me it was just the sheer education of it. I especially appreciated how the author states flat out that turbulence is not dangerous, not a problem, that pilots don't understand our fear of it, that flight crews wouldn't show up to work if it was dangerous, etc. You can also download an app that is free, though the videos within it are not, and it has neat features like a meter to measure turbulence amounts, summaries of the info such as turbulence safety that are good for calming yourself quickly, etc. I shook my phone around at home a few times and saw how much force is needed to really get the meter up there but i did not use the meter during the flight. It made me nervous to do so in case I saw a reading that I didn't want to see. I still don't want to fly if I can help it but I didn't panic during my layover and cry in a bathroom either.

If you have fear of flying read this book!

Ever since my wife and I had a new baby, I developed a serious aversion to flying. As a younger man, I used to travel for work and probably racked up close to 400k miles flying back and forth across the country (with little to no anxiety). Recently though, I would start to feel pre-flight anxiety 3 or 4 days before a flight and had pretty close to a panic attack when we flew for the first time with the new baby. In lieu of finding a therapist, I'd thought I'd give this book a shot. I can not recommend it enough. You have to commit to working through the exercises, but once you do, I think you'll find it to be tremendously helpful. I still get some pre-flight jitters, but with each flight it seems to be getting better. I've found that working through the exercises again a few days prior to flying to be helpful as well.

I was very near the point of seriously cutting back on flying and/or resorting to some sort of drug to knock me out. This book was a life-saver.
