A Good Reflection

G.K. Chesterton once described with mirth the experience of imagining Churches turned upside down, their spires pointing into the ground. The effect for him was of seeing something in an entirely new way, a twisting or tuning of reality that made something assumed appear in a fresh light. It is an effect that Chesterton frequently practiced in his writing, because he knew well that the mundane can easily be marvelous again with merely a change in perspective. This twisting, perspective-changing characteristic is the great strength of Joy Davidman's take on the Ten Commandments, Smoke on the Mountain. From it, I have come away with a renewed perspective, a challenged and changed view of the assumed and sometimes mundane Ten Commandments.

Davidman was the wife of C.S. Lewis and a fascinating character in her own right. She was Jewish, a former Communist, an American, and these characteristics are reflected in her book. As Lewis says in the introduction to the book, "every story of conversion is the story of a blessed defeat" (7), and in submitting to Christ all of Davidman's diverse history is brought into the service of her faith, providing the unique lens through which she views the Ten Commandments. (Incidentally, if you're interested in reading about her life, I highly recommend Lyle Dorsett's A Love Observed.)

As I've hinted already, Davidman's strength is in her ability to take the familiar words of the commandments and tune them in such a way that you hear them in fresh and challenging ways. In her discussion of the second command, to make no idols, Davidman says the following: "The essence of idolatry is its attempt to control and enslave the deity" (33). Here she cuts to the quick of the matter, and shows that idolatry is not a matter chiefly of gold or silver, but of the heart of man and his attempt to create gods that he can control rather than submitting to the God he cannot control.

Or take the third commandment (against taking God's name in vain). Challenging our assumptions, Davidman dismisses the simple interpretation which likens this commandment to a kind of cursing, observing that "Profanity does not insult God--a man cannot insult God; but it does cripple man" (44). Instead, according to Davidman, "what was prohibited was the misuse of power" (44). Not leaving us to simply meditate upon this truism, Davidman takes it a step further and shows how we've taken God's name in vain by applying to our own personal causes the name of the deity.

"If we object to meat-eating, we declare that God is vegetarian; if we abhor war, we proclaim a pacifist Deity. He who turned water into wine to gladden a wedding is now accused by many of favoring that abominable fluid grape juice" (46).

And of course she is right, because the real danger in taking the Lord's name in vain is applying to our own preferences a kind of divine approval. And thus she brings these observations even closer to home:

"There can hardly be a more evil way of taking God's name in vain that this way of presuming to speak in it. For here is spiritual pride, the ultimate sin, in action--the sin of believing in one's own righteousness. The true prophet says humbly, 'To me, a sinful man, God spoke.' But the scribes and Pharisees declare, 'When we speak, God agrees.' They feel no need of special revelation, for they are always, in their own view, infallible. It is this self-righteousness of the pious that most breeds atheism, by inspiring in all decent ordinary men with a loathing of the enormous lie" (46).

Of course, the book has its share of issues as well. The individual chapters feel a little formulaic (story, debunking of assumptions, re-telling of commandment), and some of the examples are locked into 1950s America. What is more, on several occasions Davidman's interpretations are not always on target. She relies a little too heavily on some common, anthropological theories about the development of both man and religion (theories which were presumed facts in the decade of this book's writing) and neglects some of the bible's own witness. For example, in her discussion of the command against adultery she identifies the impetus of the injunction as a protection of property, and while property rights are surely a portion of the seventh commandment, she misses the broader and more important element of covenant breaking which stands at the biblical heart of the commandment. These kinds of oversights serve to remind the reader that one is reading a reflection and meditation on the commandments and not a proper commentary. On the whole, however, the experience of reading Smoke on the Mountain was rewarding and enriched my understanding of the Ten Commandments.

Anyone looking for a fresh devotional meditation on the Ten Commandments, but perhaps especially a minister preparing to preach on one or all of the commandments.

Joy Davidman was an American born poet critic, novelist and Christian writer who later married Christian apologist C. S. Lewis. She was born Jewish, spent some time in the Communist party and later accepted Christianity. This book, written in the 50's, was written about the implications of the Ten Commandments for contemporary society -- and in my opinion, it is as up to date now as when it was written.

Each commandment is explained in the way that only a person of Jewish background can do. She often compares and contrasts our society today with the time in which the commandments were originally given. This helps the reader to understand them in more detail.

The only way I could list everything that has helped me from this book would be to rewrite the book here -- which, of course, would be impractical.

Where would I start?

Each chapter is full of insights that will make you stop -- many times -- and think and reflect. In her chapter "Day of Rejoicing" which deals with keeping the Sabbath, she points out how people through the history of Judaism and Christianity have taken the Sabbath and made it into a chore as opposed to the day of rejoicing and celebration that it was supposed to be. (It made me remember my own religious upbringing where I was surrounded by a big list of things that I was NOT supposed to do on Sunday.) She ends the chapter with a question and answer:

Q. How do you keep a day holy?

A. By seeing that it is holy already and behaving accordingly.

In her chapter about adultery, she is even bold enough to say, ". . . true and Christian remedy . . . is to hold the men to as high a standard as women."

On the subject of guilt she says, "For the only way to get rid of a sin is to admit it . . . the Christian is the only man who does NOT go around all the time feeling guilty. For him, sin is a burden he can lay down,. . . It is the unfortunate creature who denies the existence of sin in general or his own in particular who must go on carrying it forever."

It is rich with biblical and historical information and guaranteed to build your faith.

What a treasure!

This book is packed with wonderful stories and illustrations, a great resource for sermons and Bible studies. Though Joy Davidman wrote it over half a century ago, it is absolutely relevant today. When she critiques our society 'today' (in the '50's), she conjures up our culture in the 21st century as well. Particularly strong is her chapter on stealing. Here we see how righteous indignation over our trying to 'get something for nothing' led her to communism and finally to Christ.

About the Author

Adam Weintrit is a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Navigation (since 2008) of Gdynia Maritime University, Poland and the Head of the Navigational Department (since 2003). He was also Head of the Electronic Navigational Charts and ECDIS Simulator (1996-2010).

He has got M.Sc degree from Gdynia Maritime University, Faculty of Navigation (1985), Ph.D and DSc degree (1992) and habilitation degree (2004) from Warsaw Technical University, Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography. He has over 25 years experience in teaching and research works in the field of maritime navigation, sea transport, hydrography, cartography, geodesy and safety at sea. He has been involved in national projects founded by the Polish Committee for Scientific Research, several local projects founded by GMU and has also co-operated in few international projects, including European Union projects and he received 3 grants of the IAMU founded by the Nippon Foundation (including two as a project leader).

He has published more than 250 reports and papers in journals and conference proceedings. He is author of 18 books on navigation, including 5 handbooks on ECDIS and electronic charts. He has many times been the member of the program and organising committees of international conferences and symposiums. He is Chairman of TransNav.

C.B. Macpherson (1911-1987) was professor of political science at the University of Toronto. Widely regarded as Canada's pre-eminent political theorist of the twentieth century, he was the author of numerous books, including Democratic Theory: Essays in Retrieval and The Real World of Democracy, and was named to the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honour.

Eye Opening Stuff.

This book was required reading for a class on political, economic, and environmental processes at The Evergreen State College. The word "liberal" in the title should not be confused with the modern use of the word, i.e., liberal vs. conservative. This book uses it in the classic sense of a constitutional democracy with protections for individual rights. The book is eye opening because it teaches that the evolution of liberal democracy has had less to do with idealism than it has with the enlightened self-interest of the merchant class. The book is somewhat dense reading (lots of ideas tightly compacted) but relatively short, and a worthwhile read for anyone who is politically active.

I really enjoy Kuroneko's character. She's cute, she's fun.. and a bit reserved.
I wish Oreimo's main story kicked Kirino to the curb. ;)
Hopefully, that is exactly what this spin-off will be.. and so far.. it's been a good start! :)

The pacing seems a little rushed, but the art and characters are enjoyable.

The pacing seemed a little fast, but I have been finding that the pacing has been fast in Manga lately. Unless it's a sports or battle manga intended to spread across 50 volumes the pacing is just a bit faster than I like and it would be nice if the dialogue and characters had a little more room to breathe. Other than that I like the characters, and it's nice to have a continuation of the story with the cute but socially awkward Kuro Neko.

continued good style... this whole series is a pretty good manga adaptation. Having watched the anime I can see that it is probably closer in its style to those than to the light novels, as it was made well after them.

About the Author
Richard Blonna Ed.D CHES has a bachelor's degree in Psychology from William Paterson (1973), a Master's Degree from Seton Hall University in Education (1976; specialization in Counseling) and an Ed.D from Temple University in Health Education (1986; specialization in Health Counseling). Dr. Blonna worked for 15 years for the New Jersey State Department of Health before coming to William Paterson University in September of 1986. While employed by the NJSDH, Dr. Blonna worked in the Sexually Transmitted Disease Control Program, AIDS Program, and Family Planning Programs as a field worker, supervisor, counselor, health educator, and health education consultant. Dr. Blonna's areas of interest are stress management, counseling, epidemiology, and the use of technology in teaching community health. He has written three textbooks; COPING WITH STRESS IN A CHANGING WORLD (Mosby Publishing), READINGS AND WEBLINKS IN HUMAN SEXUALITY (Morton Publishing), and HEALTHY SEXUALITY, SECOND EDITION (Wadsworth Publishing).

Jean Levitan completed her doctoral work at New York University in the Human Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Life program within Health Education. She has taught an undergraduate course in human sexuality for over 30 years. British novelist Gaiman (American Gods; Stardust) and his long-time accomplice McKean (collaborators on a number of Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels as well as The Day I Swapped My Dad for 2 Goldfish) spin an electrifyingly creepy tale likely to haunt young readers for many moons. After Coraline and her parents move into an old house, Coraline asks her mother about a mysterious locked door. Her mother unlocks it to reveal that it leads nowhere: "When they turned the house into flats, they simply bricked it up," her mother explains. But something about the door attracts the girl, and when she later unlocks it herself, the bricks have disappeared. Through the door, she travels a dark corridor (which smells "like something very old and very slow") into a world that eerily mimics her own, but with sinister differences. "I'm your other mother," announces a woman who looks like Coraline's mother, except "her eyes were big black buttons." Coraline eventually makes it back to her real home only to find that her parents are missing--they're trapped in the shadowy other world, of course, and it's up to their scrappy daughter to save them. Gaiman twines his taut tale with a menacing tone and crisp prose fraught with memorable imagery ("Her other mother's hand scuttled off Coraline's shoulder like a frightened spider"), yet keeps the narrative just this side of terrifying. The imagery adds layers of psychological complexity (the button eyes of the characters in the other world vs. the heroine's increasing ability to distinguish between what is real and what is not; elements of Coraline's dreams that inform her waking decisions). McKean's scratchy, angular drawings, reminiscent of Victorian etchings, add an ominous edge that helps ensure this book will be a real bedtime-buster. Ages 8-up.

Grade 6-8-When Coraline and her parents move into a new house, she notices a mysterious, closed-off door. It originally went to another part of the house, which her family does not own. Some rather eccentric neighbors call her Caroline and seem not to understand her very well, yet they have information for her that will later prove vital. Bored, she investigates the door, which takes her into an alternate reality. There she meets her "other" mother and father. They are very nice to her, which pleases Coraline but also makes her a little suspicious. Her neighbors are in this other world, and they are the same, yet somehow different. When Coraline gets nervous and returns home, her parents are gone. With the help of a talking cat, she figures out that they are being held prisoner by her other parents, as are the souls of some long-lost children. Coraline's plan to rescue them involves, among other things, making a risky bargain with her other mother whose true nature is beginning to show. The rest of the story is a suspense-filled roller coaster, and the horror is all the more frightening for being slightly understated. A droll humor is present in some of the scenes, and the writing is simple yet laden with foreboding. The story is odd, strange, even slightly bizarre, but kids will hang on every word. Coraline is a character with whom they will surely identify, and they will love being frightened out of their shoes. This is just right for all those requests for a scary book.

Great dark fantasy novella

Having greatly enjoyed the movie, I thoroughly appreciated reading the book from where those noir visuals were inspired. Gaiman is a terrific raconteur -- I feel like this is common knowledge at this point -- and this novella clearly exemplifies his creative mind. I also appreciated that, although nominally termed a children's tale (Gaiman did, after all, write it for his daughter), it is complex and psychologically capacious enough to satisfy the imaginations of adults like myself. I will forgo writing a full summary, as many other reviewers have already done a great job doing so, and simply distill the story into a few thoughts that left indelible marks: a neglected and isolated young girl, suddenly found in a mysterious new setting, traverses two distinct yet interrelated realties, eventually eschewing the entropic alternate for a more fully experienced present one, all the while experiencing the breadth of characters in her own life in novel and exhilarating ways.

Fairy tale with a twist

Neil Gaiman did an amazing job of subtlety making his book Coraline creepy from the very beginning. At the beginning of the book it seems like a normal fairy tail but you can tell that something mysterious is happening. Near the middle of the book you definitely know something creepy is happening but don't know what it fully is or the reasons it happening. By the end of the book it makes you wonder what the reasons are for that to happen and wonder if it actually is over.

The issues I had with the book was that the middle just seemed to be there to make the book longer. The middle of the book seemed to repeat its self over and over which made the book get a little boring.The end of the book felt so rushed that it was hard to keep up with. Since the end of the book was so rushed it lacked the quality the rest of the book maintained.

I recommend this book to people who like fairy tales with a twist. Coraline feels like a normal fairy tale but with a morbid spin. This book is also good for people who like books that are a little bit dark. Some of the characters in Coraline are very creepy and strange.

An Intense Children's Book

Coraline was surprisingly intense. It starts innocently enough, with a young girl bored of the summer and looking for adventure. She seems a level-headed girl with a healthy imagination - a great combination for parents who are rather caught up in the day-to-day living that adults often get caught up in. And then Coraline finds herself ensnared in the adventure of a lifetime - a spooky one to be sure.

Coraline was the perfect heroine, and all of her reactions and actions were just what you'd expect from a precocious child. It was well established in the beginning that she was used to moving about on her own, with little supervision, so her ability to deal with the pretty scary things that happened to her was believable. That the author pulled character traits and settings from his own life made everything feel that much more real and natural in the storyline. There's no better way to write a "scary" story for young readers than this mixture of intense dread and optimistic hope.

Great for even young Latin students

We are using the Oxford series for homeschooling. My eight-year-old twins enjoy the stories and have easily learned to read and translate Latin with the series. They particularly like the focus on Horace as a child and the historical lessons that are attached. As a teacher I found it easy to use, but a background in language and a working knowledge of Latin helps if you are going to use it to teach younger students.

This book is great for children learning Latin.

I am a historian who uses Latin on a daily basis -- I learned it the old-fashioned way -- with Wheelock. My son is learning Latin at the sixth-grade level and has made great progress using this series -- which seems to me to be the age level they are best for. If I were teaching high school or college Latin this would NOT be my series of choice.
