It's good but also pricey
By Beany
Hard to use unless you get the whole package that includes the CDs for models and the workbook. But overall, a great outline for all the valuation concepts. A bit repetitive for people coming from a strong accounting background.

Crafting A Theology Of Stewardship (and why your church needs one), by Joel Mikell

Crafting A Theology of Stewardship is a call to the local church to re-visit and re-think their beliefs and practices in the area of stewardship, generosity, money, and giving and then to re-calibrate and re-cast those beliefs based on the teaching of scripture.

In this eBook, Joel Mikell lays out seven perspectives that should be at the heart of a theology of stewardship and presents five significant value propositions that will result. Joel also suggests a step-by-step strategy for creating a written document that articulates a theology of stewardship for the church and provides several examples to guide the process. The last section lists twenty helpful resources in the areas of stewardship, giving, and generosity.

A carefully articulated and defined theology of stewardship should be the foundation and compass for all things financial in the church. If it is done biblically, prayerfully, and methodically, it will educate, empower, encourage, instruct, challenge, grow, affirm, and guide you and your church in the journey to create a culture of extraordinary giving and extravagant generosity.

Solid, Articulate, Eye-Opening
By Tim Stevens
I started reading Crafting A Theology of Stewardship with a bit of expectation. Okay, I had a lot of expectation. I'm tired of the same ole' drivel when it comes to talking about money in the church. The bar was pretty high for what I needed from this book by Joel Mikell.

My expectations were met. It is biblically sound. It is easy to read. It brought me back to "why" my giving matters, and it had me considering the condition of my heart. Joel doesn't write from the position of a pastor or non-profit executive who will benefit (financially) from you listening to his advice. He is a life-long follower of Jesus, and a business man who has a heart to help others learn the joy and freedom in generosity.

I especially like the illustration he shares about his grand-daughter Addison who, when encouraged to give in the offering at church, exclaimed: "I don't want to give to the church--I want to give to people!" That is the heart so many carry. But sometimes the church confuses the message and gets in the way of what matters.

Joel writes for everyone--but there are especially great take-aways for pastors and church leaders who are trying to get this right. This book includes a practical, step-by-step approach to increasing the generosity-quotient in your church.

If you can't tell, I highly recommend this book.

"A Must Read for Pastors"
By Tom Pfizenmaier
As one who has lived in the stewardship laboratory (translate: local church) for the last twenty-eight years, Joel Mikell's wisdom comes as help from heaven. We need more than a "cut and paste" Bible verse approach if we are going to move from stewardship campaigns to stewardship cultures in our churches. Joel's work has already been seminal in the life and teaching of our church, and I can attest to its transformative influence and power. This little book is a crisp, clean read and everyone from pastors and congregational leaders to the person in the pew will benefit from it. This is great stuff!

Changing the Stewardship Culture
By Glenn Doak
"Crafting a Theology of Stewardship" is a much needed addtion to the study and practice of stewardship for the local church. Joel Mikell moves logically from what scripture says about stewardship to the why and how of a theology of stewardship. It is a good workbook/guide for a church looking at changing the stewardship culture for the first time to those who have studied this many times.

Joel speaks very clear language and this easy to understand book has lists of ideas and practical suggestions in a great format. The five examples of crafting a stewardship theology from real churches is valuble as well as the Appendix with its long list of resources. A very quick and good read.

Siege of Tarr-Hostigos (Kalvan Series Book 4), by John F. Carr

This second hardcover edition of SIEGE OF TARR-HOSTIGOS is the fourth book in the Kalvan Saga and begins right after Kalvan Kingmaker upon Kalvan’s return from the Trygath and his resounding military success over the invading nomad clans. Unfortunately, this military action has given Great King Lysandros a year to rebuild the Harphaxi army and, together with Styphon’s House, put together the Grand Host of Styphon’s House—the largest army ever assembled on Aryan-Transpacific, Styphon’s House subsector. Kalvan has awakened the sleeping tiger of Styphon’s House and they are out for blood. The Grand Host under the aegis of Holy Investigatory Roxthar—the Torquemada of Aryan-Transpacific, Styphon’s House Subsector—will bring the full-fledged religious war to Hos-Hostigos and the Five Kingdoms that Kalvan has always feared. This is a campaign that—win or lose—will cost Kalvan some of his good friends, part of his family and possibly the Kingship of Hos-Hostigos.

Attempts by Verkan Vall, Paratime Police Chief, to help Kalvan survive the Styphoni onslaught come to naught as he is frustrated at every level by Paratime bureaucratic regulations, the machinations of the Kalvan Study Team and First Level red tape. But far worse events will befall the University of Dhergabar Kalvan Study Team and Verkan himself, when they run head-on into the Styphoni juggernaut of the Grand Host at the Royal Foundry outside Hostigos Town. The courage and valor of Kalvan and his friends are put to the final test in this all-out war for the future of Hos-Hostigos and its royal family.

A Fitting Legacy: H. Beam Piper's Paratime Saga Continues
By David Johnson
In Siege of Tarr-Hostigos, John F. Carr continues his homage to H. Beam Piper's Paratime hero Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, a.k.a. Corporal Calvin Morrison. Building on earlier Kalvan sequels co-authored with Roland Green, Great Kings War and Kalvan Kingmaker, Carr's Siege takes place after Great King Kalvan, the former Pennsylvania state trooper and unwilling cross-dimensional interloper, has successfully foiled an attempt by the forces of the theocratic Styphon's House to overrun his kingdom with hordes of Sastragathi tribes. Instead, Kalvan managed to forge an alliance with the neighboring Trygath and turned the Sastragathi back upon the Styphoni, dealing them a crushing defeat. Siege opens with Kalvan facing a new threat, as Styphon's House, under the de facto leadership of Roxthar the Holy Investigator, throws its might behind the Great Kingdom of Hos-Harphax, from which Kalvan had originally carved his own Great Kingdom of Hos-Hostigos. All the while, the events of Kalvan Time Line are monitored and manipulated by the First Level Paratimers responsible for Kalvan's accidental transposition to this alternate world. Paratime Police Chief Verkan Vall--disguised as "Trader Verkan" to Kalvan--faces ever increasing pressure from the Opposition which has begun to use events on Kalvan's Time Line as a cover for their efforts to discredit the Paratime Police and gain control of the First Level Government.

Carr, editor of four anthologies of Piper's work (Paratime, Federation, Empire, and The Worlds of H. Beam Piper) and described by long-time collaborator Jerry Pournelle as "a recognized authority on the life and works of H. Beam Piper," uses his extensive familiarity with Piper's Paratime setting to craft a compelling story that begins to move beyond Kalvan's ongoing struggle with Styphon's House to a brewing crisis at the very heart of First Level Paratime civilization.

The series continues!
By C. A. Temm
John Carr has taken up the cause with Roland Green to continue the Otherwhen series created by deceased H. Beam Piper. King Kalvin (an American policeman lost in time)continues his struggle to save his adopted home in an alternate 1300s North America.

This book follows Carr's earlier effort in Kalvan Kingmaker in which King Kalvin had consolidated his power base in the new state of Hos Hostigos modernising the military and civil society (via commerce/education/land reform/political expansion. Roland Green has returned to add his considerable talents to a thought provoking and gritty series on an alternate world.

The battle scenes and overall plot development have improved with the return of Green working with his old partner Carr. The story itself follows in a logical order. The new characters have improved since The Kingmaker and the story catches one's attention quickly and holds it. Kalvin is under attack by a resurgent House of Styphon and is being battered on all fronts. His enemies have gotten their act together and even aid from the secretive Paratime police (of course unknown to Kalvin)is not enough...

You still have grand battles on the scale of the 100 Years War and wide spread strategies across the North American continent. Changes to society are in the making as old ways crumble in the face of Kalvan's efforts to mold a kingdom to resist Styphon's onslaught. Some of this is very PC (moves to let women enter the ranks of the fighting men,)but others have interesting ripple effects (orphans being raised as loyalists, roads, expanding the University, introducing the scientific method of investigation etc) on an entire world. New characters and societies are introduced and you see the pressures mounting on Kalvin's new country. Kalvin himself seems more human as self doubts pile on...

The weak point is the last chapter and ending, obviously it is set up for another book. Overall this is a better book than Kalvan Kingmaker and hopefully Mr. Carr and Green will continue their efforts to broaden the series strength. The book is worth purchasing, but the wait for the next in the series seems endless!

Good Read
By Amazon Customer
If you enjoyed previous novels in this series, you will probably enjoy this one as well.

There are so many sub-plots involved that the story as a whole moves forward slowly. The book ends as though the publisher were running out of space for more pages in one volume rather than the author having arrived at a good break point in the narrative.

Still, I want more.

Where There Is No Psychiatrist: A Mental Health Care Manual (Books Beyond Words), by Vikram Patel

Even though mental illnesses are common and cause great suffering in every part of the world, many health workers have a limited understanding about mental health and are less comfortable dealing with mental illness. This book is a practical manual for mental health care for the community health worker, the primary care nurse, the social worker and the primary care doctor, particularly in developing countries. After giving the reader a basic understanding of mental illness, the book goes on to describe more than 30 clinical problems associated with mental illness and uses a problem-solving approach to guide the reader through their assessment and management. Mental health issues as they arise in specific health care contexts are described, for example in a refugee camp, a school health programme or with people suffering from AIDS, as well as in mental health promotion. The final section combines quick reference information for common problems and it also includes chapters for the reader to personalise the manual for a particular location, for example, by entering local information on voluntary agencies, the names and costs of medicines and words in the local language for emotional symptoms.

Review
"In a flat 20 minutes the reader would be equipped to assess someone with mental illness. The book is simple and has an appeal at various levels from an average lay reader to a medical practitioner. This great enduring effort from Vikram Patel is timely and a godsend for all." - One India One People journal "This is no ordinary text. It is designed to be used in the large tracts of the developing world where there is no easy access to skilled medical help. It is a very considerable undertaking, which succeeds with ingenuity and flair. The range of psychiatric problems covered is impressive. It is impossible to gauge the benefits to sufferers from mental disorder that this remarkable book will bring." - W. A. Lishman (Emeritus Professor of Neuropsychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, London) "The general practitioner (health worker or doctor) tends to know a lot about physical illnesses but too little about mental health. Until now, a huge gap has remained in the provision of primary health care in the field of mental health. Now, at last, that need has been magnificently filled, with Dr Vikam Patel's very comprehensive yet remarkably user-friendly book Where There Is No Psychiatrist. How I wish had had this book years before!" - David Werner (Author of 'Where There Is No Doctor') --David Werner

Where there is no Psychiatrist: a useful text for those dealing with mental illness in a 3rd world setting
By Norm Wetterau
I am a family phyician who teaches introductory Medical Psychology at Hope Africa Medical School in Burundi. This is an excellent introductory book for medical students, nursing students and for others who might deal with mental illlness (social workers, village health workers, pastors). It gives general principles and symptoms and discusses what can cause them. Short case vinettes are often presented. It is very easy for someone who is not familiar with mental illness and substance abuse to understand it, even if their first language is not English. My students read the book, practice interviewing each other and understand it. Difficult subjects like the difference between delerium and dementia are also presented. One chapter deals with mental health issues in various groups like prisoners, refugees, homeless etc. This chapter really brings things home to them and covers things that much larger psychiatric texts may skip. It is socially and clinically very revelant. It would be useful for anyone feeling unprepared to deal with mental illness. I hope that it will soon be translated into Spanish and French.

Comprehensive
By Talbert Bentley
A good accompaniment to Where There is No Doctor and Where There is No Dentist, both essentials for the rural health care worker. There is emphasis on non-drug related treatments for mental illness but drug treatments are also mentioned.

Dealing with Mental Illness for the Community Health Worker
By Lance M. Foster
This book is designed primarily for community health professionals in developing nations. As a longtime owner of Where There is No Doctor, I bought this book hoping it would be as useful and enlightening as "Doctor" was, not only for international situations but even for backcountry situations here in the U.S., or if you are poor and don't have access to medical care here in America.

Physical illness is understood and treated much more readily in international aid and even domestic crises. Most people no matter the culture are much more comfortable dealing with the physically injured than the mentally/emotionally/spiritually injured. People shy away from the mentally ill, not knowing what to do.
Having encountered mentally ill people while in Nigeria in 1996 as well as in various cities in the U.S., I wondered what I might be able to learn by reading this book.

The book begins with an overview of mental illness, including disorders common to all cultures: depression and anxiety, psychoses, special issues with the elderly and children, causation and cultural factors. It then goes on to assessment of a patient, interviews and diagnosis. Treatment options follow, focusing on drug treatments and counseling ("talking treatments").

The next section goes into more depth on clinical problems, such as addressing troublesome behaviors such as violence, aggression, confusion, hearing voices, suicidal tendencies, seizures and fits, postpartum issues, and mental illness among the elderly. It goes on then to look at symptoms such as psychosomatic illness, panic/fear, insomnia, being tired all the time, sexual problems, loss of bodily function, alcoholism and binge drinking, sleeping pill addiction, tobacco and gambling addictions. Next it addresses problems resulting from trauma, such as spouse abuse, rape, or death of a loved one. Problems in childhood and adolescence are looked at, such as childhood development, retardation, ADHD/hyperactivity, child abuse, bed-wetting, and adolescent depression.

One of the most interesting and unique sections of the book is "Mental Health in Other Contexts," such as primary care (focus on prevention rather than cure of disease) and reproductive health... and uniquely, mental illness among prisoners, refugees, in times of disaster, homeless people, street children, and HIV/AIDS. There is also an excellent reminder that healthcare workers must also care for their own mental health.

The author then discusses mental health promotion and advocacy, including creating support groups, prevention of mental retardation, school programs, early identification of illness, prevention of substance abuse, human rights and mental illness, breakdown of relationships, poverty and gender issues.

A special effort is made to give tips on how to adapt the manual for local issues, essential medicines to have on hand, a quick reference guide to medicines for mental illness, and a place where you can write down special resources and contacts for your area in the manual itself. There are flow charts for clinical problem-solving, a glossary of terms, a bibliography and index. Numerous cartoons and illustrations help the readability and engagement with the text.

Overall this is a fantastic resource that was much needed and should be made widely available.

There are some issues that I would like to see expanded in future editions, or perhaps another book:

The paradigm/operating assumption of the book is western biomedicine and western psychology. Although mental illness can have organic causes that are treatable through medication, more recognition needs to be paid to cultural context of mental conditions and working within the cultural paradigms of various cultures.

Different cultures and societies have different definitions of mental illness. For example, being a "were" among the Yoruba of Nigeria, or having susto in Latin America. More attention and recognition should be paid to how western healthcare can successfully collaborate with indigenous healers in the treatment of patients.
And what if you don't have meds? Where There is No Doctor supplied some stopgap solutions when you are really stuck without resources.

Western biomedicine, psychiatry and psychology can learn much from traditional cures and treatments, indigenous knowledge systems, as well as working cooperatively with local healers, spiritual leaders, and other specialists. There are many examples of this in the U.S. in the Indian Health Service, which has a good and still developing record of working with medicine people and healers in caring for patients within traditional systems, including prevention and counseling.

There also needs to be a greater expansion of special issues in times of natural disaster, refugees, etc., including group psychology, mobs, rioting, crime, and devastation. I don't know if there is something like it out there already, but there should be a book specially written just about dealing with mental health in large scale disasters, such as wars, tsunami, earthquakes, epidemics, and societal collapse, in developed or developing countries. The lessons about mental health have yet to be distilled from Katrina in New Orleans, the Asian Tsunami, and the still unfolding tragedy in Haiti.

Until he manages to break free ...

What follows for Juliet is a long, exhausting journey through the harsh and unknown plains of Mongolia, forced to accompany a man who is as unreasonably violent as he is obsessively searching for his redemption. Is the Half Face insane and beyond hopes of rehabilitation? Or should she believe his own words, supported by the traditional shamans that this tattooed man seeks to consult, and accept that he is possessed by a dangerous spirit?

Brilliant!
By Cindi Clubbs
This novella was a surprise and a treasure from the first page to the last. Author Mara Li has written a psychological suspense/romance/young adult story that will cause the reader to ponder what he or she would do in certain situations. The protagonist, Juliet Cunningham, is put into one bad situation after another by Half Face, the hardened criminal, including murder. However, by the time Mara Li brings the reader to the end of the plot, the reader may be rethinking everything that he or she had previously believed about the world, criminals, and what makes a person good or evil. Can a tormented and tortured soul find redemption? Li obviously is a student of human nature, watching and dissecting the whys and wherefores of human beings and their interactions. And it shows--this novella gripped me and didn't let go until I knew what happened at the end. I did not put it down until I was finished and I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending. Very, very good story!!!

A well-done debut novella!
By Pemberley Proud
I was given this eBook by the editor to read for review. I relish opportunities to read works by the not-quite-known authors and the not-yet-established authors. Even so, I was asked for an honest review and that is what I am here providing.

This is a good story; a novella that is well written and well developed. It is a stand-alone story without a cliffhanger (thank goodness!!!). Even with a conclusion provided, the author has allowed for the possibility for a follow-up story. Black Face, White Face is not a romance. It is a hostage-captor story in which the hostage maintains her fear and anger throughout -- more authentic to an actual hostage situation than romances where the hostage and her captor develop a love-interest. This story held my attention from the first chapter to the end - despite the interruptions, commitments and obligations being a mom of three kids entails. I read this in a day, which speaks for the story, as I am not usually able to muster the time to read a book in a day.

So why only a three-star rating? I'd like the ability to give half stars. It is better than "okay" and I liked it very much, but the ending felt rushed, lacking the detail and descriptions that made up the first 90% of the book and I felt the writer didn't really know herself how to describe the final courtroom scene or the intervening three years. The author does provide a chapter "three years later" and an epilogue, but the story does not feel concluded to this reader -- I want more information, more insight to their emotions, a better understanding of both Juliet's and Black's states-of-being.

Even with this, I recommend this story; it is well done and I am left wanting more. That, itself, may be recommendation enough... I read her book and the author left me wanting more!

Great debut!
By Kawehi's Book Blog
3.5-4 stars!!

Going into this read, I had no expectations whatsoever. But boy was it something great!!

My first initial thoughts of this book before beginning it were, “is this s a forbidden romance of Stockholm syndrome?”. But no, it turned out not to be.

No, it was a story of absolution and redemption and finding yourself.

I liked how even through the harshest of situations and realities that both Juliet and “Half Face” were able to find a medium where they were able to bring out the best in each other and teach each other life's woes and whims.

I thought that they were a great balance as Juliet makes Half Face want to cling to the good and see the “small victories” in things and changes him for the better (and he for her).

My only complaint though in regards to this book is that I would have liked an even longer epilogue with more insight as to their physical and mental state of beings as there is a time gap between the epilogue and the chapter before. I mean, I get why the ending turned out that way but at the same time I would have loved to see a glimpse of more instead of feeling unfulfilled and unsatisfied and letting my mind wonder as to what was going on in the characters' minds at that point.

So over all, a great and well developed read but I just wish that the ending wasn't so conclusive and abrupt. I will absolutely be keeping an eye out more from this author as she makes a terrific entre to the writing world! Great debut Ms. Li!

Practical advice and tools for building and evaluating coalitions
By Susan R. Lavinghouze
This is the single book you will need to facilitate growth and evaluation of coalitions. This book is excellent for the researcher as well as the practitioner. It is not just another theory book but one that will give you concrete advice and tools. You won't need a PhD to read and use this book but all levels of practice and research will soon find this book to be their favorite resource.

This book is a must first-read book for all of our funded grantees working with coalitions. We provide this book to all funded sites, fellows, and evaluation staff.

Coalitions are a great resource for promoting community change but they can quickly run off-track without the right nurturing. This book will be the resource of choice for anyone charged with the nurturing of a coalition.

Rates an A+: Coalitions and Partnerships in Community Health
By Sarah
Coalitions and Partnerships in Community Health by Frances Butterfoss is a comprehensive text that is an invaluable resource for those working to create stronger collaborations for improved community health, as well as for researchers and academicians preparing future health educators. The rich experience of the author of over fifteen years of building, leading, evaluating, and consulting on coalitions and partnerships is evident as she combines her practical experience and insights with proven research to make her points.

Dr. Butterfoss eloquently makes the case for why coalitions and partnerships are important in the first sentence of her book: "...coalitions and partnerships successfully bring people together, expand resources, and focus on a problem of community concern better than any single group or agency could do alone...." This book provides not only a philosophical and theoretical basis but also practical guidance and tools on how to develop and sustain successful partnerships and coalitions.

The book is divided into four main parts covering the importance of coalitions and partnerships, building and sustaining the coalition or partnership itself, and the planning and evaluation of activities.

This text of over 500 pages truly is a one-stop shop for creating effective coalitions and partnerships. The wisdom and insights found in Butterfoss's book provide a detailed roadmap for thoughtful groups of people who make up coalitions and partnerships and who are endeavoring to change the world by improving the quality of life through healthier and safer lives.

Coalition Bible
By Melissa J. Magstadt
I was searching Amazon.com for books on coalition building and came across this book last spring and ordered it as I was a part of starting a state coalition for diabetes. And I am really glad that I did. It not only gave our coalition a great working foundation full of wisdom and knowledge from someone who has been there, but I know that we are forming a solid coalition using the tools and suggestions that are in the book. It really has been our coalition bible, and my book is highlighted, underlined, with post-it note tabs through out the book because the information is so valuable and useful. This is the perfect book if you are developing a coalition, would like to develop one, or have a coalition already in existence. You will avoid pitfalls and build a strong coalition following the recommendations in this book. You will not be disappointed with it.

The Knowledge Illusion: Why We Never Think Alone, by Steven Sloman, Philip Fernbach

“The Knowledge Illusion is filled with insights on how we should deal with our individual ignorance and collective wisdom.” —Steven Pinker

We all think we know more than we actually do.

Humans have built hugely complex societies and technologies, but most of us don’t even know how a pen or a toilet works. How have we achieved so much despite understanding so little? Cognitive scientists Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach argue that we survive and thrive despite our mental shortcomings because we live in a rich community of knowledge. The key to our intelligence lies in the people and things around us. We’re constantly drawing on information and expertise stored outside our heads: in our bodies, our environment, our possessions, and the community with which we interact—and usually we don’t even realize we’re doing it.

The human mind is both brilliant and pathetic. We have mastered fire, created democratic institutions, stood on the moon, and sequenced our genome. And yet each of us is error prone, sometimes irrational, and often ignorant. The fundamentally communal nature of intelligence and knowledge explains why we often assume we know more than we really do, why political opinions and false beliefs are so hard to change, and why individually oriented approaches to education and management frequently fail. But our collaborative minds also enable us to do amazing things. This book contends that true genius can be found in the ways we create intelligence using the world around us.

Review
“In The Knowledge Illusion, the cognitive scientists Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach hammer another nail into the coffin of the rational individual... positing that not just rationality but the very idea of individual thinking is a myth.” —The New York Times Book Review

“Sloman and Fernbach offer clever demonstrations of how much we take for granted, and how little we actually understand... The book is stimulating, and any explanation of our current malaise that attributes it to cognitive failures—rather than putting it down to the moral wickedness of one group or another—is most welcome. Sloman and Fernbach are working to uproot a very important problem... [The Knowledge Illusion is] written with vigour and humanity.” —Financial Times

“The Knowledge Illusion is at once both obvious and profound: the limitations of the mind are no surprise, but the problem is that people so rarely think about them... In the context of partisan bubbles and fake news, the authors bring a necessary shot of humility: be sceptical of your own knowledge, and the wisdom of your crowd.” —The Economist

“A breezy guide to the mechanisms of human intelligence.” —Psychology Today

“In an increasingly polarized culture where certainty reigns supreme, a book advocating intellectual humility and recognition of the limits of understanding feels both revolutionary and necessary. The fact that it’s a fun and engaging page-turner is a bonus benefit for the reader.” —Publishers Weekly

“An utterly fascinating and unsettling book, The Knowledge Illusion shows us how everything we know is bound together with knowledge of others. Sloman and Fernbach break down many of our assumptions about science, how we think and how we know anything at all about the world in which we live. Despite the wide-scale deconstruction, the authors are upbeat... Anyone engaged in the work of nurturing healthy and flourishing communities will ultimately have to wrestle with the questions posed in this book. Sloman and Fernbach help us to do so gracefully, acknowledging the truth of how little we know, and finding hope in this precarious situation.” —Relevant Magazine

“Between Sloman and Fernbach they have provided an insightful and thought-provoking read on how much the individual knows in relation to the community of knowledge.” —NPJ Journal

“We all know less than we think we do, including how much we know about how much we know. There’s no cure for this condition, but there is a treatment: this fascinating book. The Knowledge Illusion is filled with insights on how we should deal with our individual ignorance and collective wisdom.” —Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of How the Mind Works and The Stuff of Thought

“I love this book. A brilliant, eye-opening treatment of how little each of us knows, and how much all of us know. It's magnificent, and it's also a lot of fun. Read it!” —Cass R. Sunstein, coauthor of Nudge and founder and director, Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy, Harvard Law School

“Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach are experts on ignorance. Their absorbing book reveals all the ways we delude ourselves into thinking we know more than we do.” —Jonah Berger, author of Contagious and Invisible Influence

“Cognitive science attempts to understand the workings of the individual mind.  In this brilliant book, Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach show us that what cognitive science has learned is how much the individual mind depends on the minds of others. No matter how smart we are, as individuals we know (almost) nothing. Reading this book will inspire you to cultivate your own expertise, but even more, it will inspire you to seek out and appreciate the expertise of others. This book is a blueprint for an enlightened society.” —Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice, Practical Wisdom, and Why We Work.

“We radically overestimate how much we know. In this fascinating book, Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach examine the origin and consequences of this knowledge illusion, exploring both the extent of our ignorance and the clever ways in which we overcome it. This is an exceptionally clear and well-reasoned book, and it has some important and radical things to say about everything from the allure of stories to how iPhones make us smarter to the pros and cons of democracy. This is psychology at its best.” —Paul Bloom, Professor of Psychology at Yale University, and author of Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion

Great overview of ignorance and community knowledge, but not enough advice on how to deal with it
By Matt Kruse
This book is a fairly easy introduction to the topics of ignorance, the knowledge illusion, how we fool ourselves, and the value/necessity of storing knowledge in a group and how they came to be. The ideas are explained well with lots of examples. I wish everyone would read this book and really think about how much they don't know. The book directly addresses the current political climate, which makes it even more relevant.

The only thing that tempted me to give it 4 stars was what I thought was a lack of advice on how to deal with these problems. Many pages were spent explaining how human thinking is fragile and how this results in bad effects. But there was very little discussion about how to proceed with this understanding. What are some practical ways to improve the knowledge system so individual ignorance has less of an impact? How does this apply to bosses/managers? Community leaders? Parents? Social Media?

I would welcome a second book about that topic specifically - now that you know all the problems with how we think and where knowledge is actually stored, here are some practical strategies for making the most of it!

Inspiring, paradigm shifting perspective on knowledge – and what humans can achieve together
By Paul Gibbons
The Knowledge Illusion tells us something depressing – we don’t know nearly as much INDIVIDUALLY as we think, and something liberating – COLLECTIVELY, thinking together, we can achieve magical things.

Day in and day out we use objects, such as a ballpoint pen, about whose inner workings we know nothing.  On more complex issues, such as climate change, we may have strong positions – but who among us could describe how global temperatures are measured, what the albedo effect is, what the main sources of greenhouse gasses are, and how climate models (which run on super computers) work?

Professors Sloman and Fernbach start with a tour of cognitive science, including neuroscience, psychology, decision making, and contemporary social psychological research.  They illustrate this research with compelling anecdotes making it come alive for the layperson.  By the middle of the book I was hooked, as they delve into subjects such as scientific literacy – did you know that only 73% of Americans know that the Earth moves around the Sun and not vice versa?!

In the last half of the book, they offer solutions beyond the commonplace – sure education is important, but if we are right that “we don’t think alone” – what does that imply for the way we teach and learn?  What does that mean for communities, teams, political discourse?

In a world where opinions are more polarized than before, despite rich information resources, Sloman and Fernbach invite us to be more humble about our own knowledge, but inspire us with what we can achieve if we drop dogmatic and hubristic stances, and think about knowledge as a collective enterprise.

''We suffer from an illusion that we understand how things work when in fact our understanding is meager''
By Clay Garner
''Our point is not that people are ignorant. It’s that people are more ignorant than they think they are. We all suffer, to a greater or lesser extent, from an illusion of understanding, an illusion that we understand how things work when in fact our understanding is meager'' (6)

''Illusion of understanding''! Who me?

''The mind is not built to acquire details about every individual object or situation. We learn from experience so that we can generalize to new objects and situations. The ability to act in a new context requires understanding only the deep regularities in the way the world works, not the superficial details.'' (11)

What source do we use?

''Instead of appreciating complexity, people tend to affiliate with one or another social dogma. Because our knowledge is enmeshed with that of others, the community shapes our beliefs and attitudes. It is so hard to reject an opinion shared by our peers that too often we don’t even try to evaluate claims based on their merits. We let our group do our thinking for us. Appreciating the communal nature of knowledge should make us more realistic about what’s determining our beliefs and values.'' (15)

Not me! I decide for myself! Really? George Bernard Shaw wrote . . .

''The warrior of the twentieth century was driven as much by faith as the warrior of the fifteenth century: In the Middle Ages people believed that the earth was flat, for which they had at least the evidence of their senses: we believe it to be round, not because as many as one per cent of us could give the physical reasons for so quaint a belief, but because modern science has convinced us that nothing that is obvious is true, and that everything that is magical, improbable, extraordinary, gigantic, microscopic, heartless, or outrageous is scientific.'' (126)

Wow! You think the earth rotates and the sun is stationary? Don't you believe your eyes?

Conclusion: Appraising Ignorance and Illusion

The allure of illusion -

''We’ve seen that people are surprisingly ignorant, more ignorant than they think. We’ve also seen that the world is complex, even more complex than one might have thought. So why aren’t we overwhelmed by this complexity if we’re so ignorant? How can we get around, sound knowledgeable, and take ourselves seriously while understanding only a tiny fraction of what there is to know?''

What to do?

''The answer is that we do so by living a lie. We ignore complexity by overestimating how much we know about how things work, by living life in the belief that we know how things work even when we don’t. We tell ourselves that we understand what’s going on, that our opinions are justified by our knowledge, and that our actions are grounded in justified beliefs even though they are not. We tolerate complexity by failing to recognize it. That’s the illusion of understanding.'' (33)

'Living a lie'! Everybody? 'Illusion of understanding'? Man, this is bad! Professors too?

''When academics encounter a new idea that doesn’t conform to their preconceptions, there’s often a sequence of three reactions: first dismiss, then reject, and finally declare it obvious. The initial reaction to an idea that challenges an academic’s world view is to ignore it: Assume it’s not worthy of one’s time and consideration. If that doesn’t work, if community pressure forces the idea to be confronted, academics come up with reasons to reject it. Academics are terrific at justifying their opposition to an idea. Finally, if the idea is just too good to reject, if the idea hangs on in the community, academics find reasons to claim they knew it all along because it’s self-evident.'' (255)

This conclusion is from self-same academics! 'They just reject it'! Such as . . .

One glaring omission in this work is the neglect of Carl Menger, Ludwig Von Mises, Fredrick Von Hayek and their work on 'use of knowledge in society'. These are world famous scholars with profound insights into this same challenge. Not one mention, either by name or even the concept. Just ignored. Exactly the error this book is attempting to resolve!

Hayek - ''Adam Ferguson expressed it, “nations stumble upon establishments, which are indeed the result of human action but not the result of human design”; and that the spontaneous collaboration of free men often creates things which are greater than their individual minds can ever fully comprehend. This is the great discovery of classical political economy which has become the basis of our understanding not only of economic life but of most truly social phenomena.''

And Bastiat - ''If the market is free, no one can accumulate unless he renders a service to someone else. . . . In reality, said Bastiat, capital is always put at the service of other people who do not own it, and it is always used to satisfy a desire (good or bad) that other people want satisfied. In that important sense, all capital is truly owned in common by the entire community - and the greater accumulation of capital, the more it's benefits are shared in common.''
