Use negative space to positively improve your watercolors.

Negative space has long been one of my favorite art principles, but one that few artists truly seem to understand or take full advantage of. So when I saw the title of this book, I was more than a little intrigued. After pouring through this book, I was left with a lasting, positive impression.

Linda Kemp not only understands negative space, but she capitalizes upon it to create bold, stunning and truly unique watercolor paintings. She offers the reader a wide array of creative ideas that develop negative space into focal centerpieces, and clearly explains the various techniques used to pull them off, such as developing lively, bold underpaintings as the basis for later paintings and how to create textures that further emphasize negative space.

I am very impressed with this book. While the author's style of painting is quite different from my own, and may well differ greatly from your's, she offers many fun, exciting ideas to get the creative juices flowing, keep the process exciting and bring liveliness to into any style of painting.

If you want to explore exciting ways to treat negative space, and have an interest in watercolor or other water media, this is definitely the book for you.

Clearly explains a technique that difficult for the eye/mind to see.

Negative painting is beautiful but difficult for the mind to grasp with a paint brush in ones hand. Linda explains the process by building on simple symbols to eventually paint a very complex image. Her work is beautiful, complex, and serene. She does an excellent job in the book and also in her workshop of teaching you how to paint with negative images.

This was a book which was both wonderfully inspiring in its 'message' and very clearly written. There are beautiful colour plates to describe the process, accompanied by very clear instructions.
I love this book, and am loving the art I am producing as a result of studying it!

I was fortunate enough to attend a talk by Dr. David Giltner at University of Virginia, Charlottesville. The talk was very informative and provided the great insights about making a transition from academia to industry. Dr. Giltner is an eloquent speaker and writer, he did a fantastic job in compiling the interviews in his book. All the interviewees he chose are having great careers in industries ranging from optics, photonics, fabrications, medical devices, etc. The book has changed my perspective towards working in industry. It covers several subtle points such as;

0.1 Skill sets we develop working in grad school that can be used in industry
0.2 Scientists as entrepreneurs
0.3 Different work cultures in Industry and academia
0.4 Kind of jobs a scientist can hold in industry

If you are considering to make a transition, I strongly recommend to read this book. At the end, thanks a lot David for writing the book. It was a great read.

Practical insights for science grad students and experienced engineers alike!

The preface of this book informs readers immediately that the intended audience is graduate science students deciding between pursuit of a purely academic career or a career in industry. In reality, I found it also useful for those like myself, scientists looking back at some point in their career trying to be strategic about future career development and desiring to communicate what they have to offer potential employers.

The scientists interviewed in this book come from a variety of academic disciplines, and I found it interesting to see how they arrived in their current roles. These roles ranged from process reliability experts and senior engineers to founders and CEOs of startup companies. The author addresses questions such as how the interviewees were initially attracted to science education, what led them to move out of the lab and into industry, and what gaps were present in their university education that would have been useful in industrial roles. It is essential for scientists entering industry to be able to translate their skill set to the types of problems present in industry. Several scientists voiced the importance of this concept when trying to convince a potential employer to hire you.

A central theme addressed by the author through multiple interviews is the complementary, yet different, roles played by scientists and engineers in industry. These two types of people bring a unique approach and set of questions to problems. The author and several interviewees expressed the importance of understanding and appreciating these subtleties, especially as teams are assembled to solve complex problems.

As I alluded to earlier, I found the book very useful as a mirror to examine my own career and renew my efforts to develop my skills in new roles. For the intended audience, I believe the author has written a very practical, insightful, and actionable reference for students presently pursuing science degrees. I suggest this as a great gift idea for them. It's a short read at 88-pages, and I intend to re-read the book again.

Eye-opening confessions from scientists in real world settings

As a graduate student, I had the pleasure to meet Dr. Giltner in person through a seminar he gave at our university and hear about the content of his book before reading it. The seminar was about how to transition as a PhD from an academic to an industrial environment, as a "real life after the doctorate"-like talk. That is essentially what the book is about from a graduate student standpoint. It portrays the path that ten scientists followed, who for different reasons became very successful in their industrial careers, in a typical interview format.

Despite the steady structure of all interviews -interviewee academic background, transition to industry/entrepreneurship, career evolution, and final thoghts/comments- each of the very diverging experiences provides a unique insight to the shift of their careers, making the book very complete as a whole. The main focus of the book is the need of scientists in industry as problem solvers, that is, people who have been trained in dealing with stubborn experiments without much previous knowledge on the topic (and who actually enjoy doing it). Overall, the message appeared to me as "there is no specific way towards success, but there is always a way".

The interviews are abound in good advice and although the interviewees belong to a physics/engineering background, all the great hints are applicable to mostly any discipline. As a graduate student, I have no doubt I will often resort to the book throughout my career to keep picking hints and find new understandings to the interviews. I strongly believe any PhD student would greatly benefit from reading "Turning Science into Things People Need".

Great for learning

I learned to crochet using this company's crochet book called by a similar name. When I had decided to learn to knit, I tried some other books but found the instruction very unclear as well as the photos. So, I tried this company's book for knitting remembering how easy it was to follow for crochet and now I'm knitting with no problems! This is a great starter book.

Good book

This is a good little book to have for a beginner. I am a visual learner and some of the illustrations can be a little difficult for me but you can read along because Everything is broken down into steps. Everything is explained well. It's not a big book (52 pages) but it is handy to have. It also has 20 projects to knit.I am new to knitting and I have a long way to go but I like the way the info is broken done into easy to learn bite size pieces. I hope this helps :-)

No more excuses!

I was introduced to knitting years ago by a friend who knew I had a VERY stressful job. She said it was soothing, like a meditation...relaxing... and she was RIGHT! Recently I decided to get back into it, and realized I'd pretty much forgotten the basics. I found this book, and it is amazing. It's been so many years, that I'm basically a beginner again. This book breaks things down into small, manageable 'bites' for even the most frazzled, time-constrained person. The pictures are clear and the instructions straightforward. I liked it so much that I bought one for a co-worker who had expressed an interest in learning how to knit for the first time.

About the Author
Dr. Dennis P. Nolan has had a long career devoted to risk engineering, fire protection engineering, loss prevention engineering and systems safety engineering. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration from Berne University, Master of Science degree in Systems Management from Florida Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He is a U.S. registered professional engineer in fire protection engineering in the state of California.

He is currently on the Executive Management staff of Saudi Aramco, located in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, as a Loss Prevention Consultant/Chief Fire Prevention Engineer. He covers some of the largest oil and gas facilities in the world. The magnitude of the risks, worldwide sensitivity, and foreign location make this one the highly critical fire risk operations in the world. He has also been associated with Boeing, Lockheed, Marathon Oil Company, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation in various fire protection engineering, risk analysis, and safety roles in several locations in the United States and overseas. As part of his career, he has examined oil production, refining, and marketing facilities under severe conditions and in various unique worldwide locations, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and North and South America. His activity in the aerospace field has included engineering support for the NASA Space Shuttle launch facilities at Kennedy Space Center (and for those undertaken at Vandenburg Air Force Base, California) and “classified” national defense systems.

Dr. Nolan has received numerous safety awards and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, He is the author of many technical papers and professional articles in various international fire safety publications. He has written four other books, Handbook of Fire and Explosion Protection Engineering Principles for Oil, Gas, Chemical and Related Facilities (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Editions), Fire Fighting Pumping Systems at Industrial Facilities (1st & 2nd Editions), Encyclopedia of Fire Protection (1st & 2nd Editions), and Loss Prevention and Safety Control Terms and Definitions. Percussionist Samuel Z. Solomon has been responsible for dozens of world premieres of solo and small ensemble works. With saxophonist Eric Hewitt, he is co-founder of the Yesaroun? Duo; the Duo has been featured in recitals all over the northeast United States, in Italy, and in Cuba. Mr. Solomon made his Carnegie Hall debut in February of 2000, performing the world premiere of John Mackey?s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra as guest soloist with the New York Youth Symphony. In December 1999 he was featured in Lincoln Center?s Alice Tully Hall, performing the American premiere of Iannis Xenakis?s final composition, O-Mega for percussion solo and chamber orchestra, with the New Juilliard Ensemble. Mr. Solomon spent six summers at Tanglewood, three as a Fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center, and six years at Juilliard, receiving two degrees. He lives in New York City.

an excellent companion to standard orchestration texts

This book is an excellent companion to the standard orchestration texts one might buy, such as Adler or Forsyth. It goes into great detail about all of the instruments, sticks, notation, etc. Basically anything you could need to start writing for percussion, which isn't often covered in great detail in other books. It's very nice to now have a reference that doesn't gloss over the percussion and gives very good insights into writing for this large and complex body of instruments.

I am a concert music composer. One of the things I like about being such a composer in the 21th-century is the abundance of percussion instruments and complex rhythms available to us. However, writing and notating these percussion parts is also a challenge, unique to the 21th-century, and we must have the guidance and assistance of professional percussionist. "How to Write for Percussion" is now my new guide to notating composing for percussion. I am enjoying this book very much.

First, if you haven't already, read all of the other reviews of this book. Then if you haven't already, click add to cart and put in your info!!! This book is what all the other reviews say, it is a must for ANYONE, percussionints, composers, friends, family, your grandma who likes to compose the occasional snare drum trio on the weekends, ANYONE who loves percussion and wants the most informative source on composing methods for it. Don't be that composer who puts the ride cymbal notation below the bass drum, trust me, we've all seen it done!!!! CHECK THIS BOOK OUT!

I commend the author on addressing the topic of rehabilitation of the injured singing voice. I am particularly impressed by the many applications for university level singing pedagogy and program administration. Vocal injury is a high risk for developing voices as well as professional singers, and injury prevention is best introduced during training. In the university setting, the student has a support system far greater than in the professional world, where vocal injury can end a career. Teachers and students should be encouraged to manage these problems early, with the involvement of an entire voice team. About the Author
Director of The Chicago Center for Professional Voice, and Associate Professor of Music Theater and Classical Voice at Western Michigan University, Minnesota-born soprano Karen Wicklund has sung leading roles with the San Francisco, Santa Fe, Lake George, Omaha and other American Opera companies. Dr. Wicklund holds undergrad music degrees from St. Olaf College, graduate music degrees from University of Michigan and Northwestern University, and a second Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Governors State University. An internationally known singer's wellness specialist, her website www.singershealth.com delves into current issues in singing voice health. She is also a therapeutic singing voice specialist, and sub-specializes in treating singers with vocal injuries. Dr. Wicklund has published numerous journal articles for the Journal of Singing, Medical Problems of Performing Artists, Women of Note Quarterly, and given presentations and papers for the American Speech-Hearing Association and National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). A Good First Start

I think this book is a good first start in attempting to blend the professions of Speech Pathology (SLP) and Singing Teachers; however I agree with the reviewer "Mrs. PWR orchidmom" that readers, especially singing teachers, should "Be Careful". Another reviewer questioned who "Mrs. PWR orchidmom" was and what credentials she had to justify her impressions of the book. For that reason alone I will preface my statements by saying I have an undergraduate degree in vocal performance and a Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology, with an emphasis in voice. This book uses many color pictures taken from a textbook commonly used in Anatomy and Physiology classes taught to speech pathology students. These pictures are very illuminating, however, having to pay to use copyrighted pictures from another textbook probably factors into the high cost of Dr. Wicklynd's book. I also agree that most well-trained SLPs will find the chapters on anatomy and physiology to be too simplistic. Alternately, based on the reviews I have read to date, many singing teachers don't realize how basic this information is, therefore, they don't know what they don't know. Therein lies the need for "CAUTION". I don't believe singing teachers should engage in vocal rehabilitation unless they are thoroughly trained in the anatomy and physiology of respiration, phonation, resonation, and articulation, and this book does not provide sufficient information for that level of competence. Also, unless singing teachers are licensed and prepared to be financially liable for any harm they can cause to a student's vocal health, they would be putting themselves at risk by engaging in vocal rehabilitation unless they are also working collaboratively with a licensed SLP. I am concerned that some readers may not realize this. That being said, I do appreciate the spirit of Dr. Wicklund for writing this book and believe that her goal was to address the lack of formal training concerning the workings of the voice provided to singers and future singing teachers in their academic programs. Dr. Wieklund is attempting to provide some of that information, however more is needed.

Invaluable Resource

Dr. Wicklund has provided voice teachers with an invaluable resource. The past several months I have used many elements in the this book including the hyper-functioning exercises, rehabilitative repertoire suggestions in addition to the clear information about the various types of voice disorders. Whether you are a voice teacher regularly working with voice disorders or someone who comes across this problem only once in awhile, eventually every teacher needs to know how to help a singer with some vocal problem. You will find many answers in this book.

Excellent Resource!

Dr. Wicklund's book in the most inclusive resource for voice teachers that I've come across. I especially enjoyed the clear, concise anatomical views- the best I've seen! Also enjoyed pouring through the Appendixes as much as the body of the book itself. They include everything from IPA charts and ETS Frequency Voice Ranges to professional Codes of Ethics for Voice Teachers.
