I'm not sure this is really a great interview prep book. If you've got an interview next week or next month this book isn't going to be terribly useful. However if you've done some Java software development but might be weak on a few areas that you don't use often, this book can be a great introductory "how to" book.

For example the chapter on Hibernate is the best example I've ever seen of a quick, simple yet effective tutorial on using Hibernate.

There are weak points in the book. I felt the topics on design patterns are poorly written (far too short) and failed to decently convey the concept of each of the patterns.

So this is a catch 22, on the one hand it's a very good book for it's size, on the other hand if you truly want to understand a concept this book isn't going to be quite enough (for many of the concepts). But I feel that it fills a gap of explaining what some things are, which otherwise the documentation is too massive and complex to clearly convey the essentials.

The topic of "version control" is completely missing (surprisingly a lot of developers lack good comprehension of good usage of version control systems). This is a book on Java, so it certainly is excusable that it does not cover version control.

As a veteran developer (over 35 years of experience, including Java since it was first released) I'll share my opinion that these sort of technical interviews are a complete waste of time. Asking candidates these types of questions is a worthless attempt to judge the competence of a candidate.

The book's description of "at computer" tests doesn't cover the real world reality that a lot of "at computer" tests are actually completely artificial and do not mimic real world working conditions at all. I suspect the author's experience is biased toward interviews at major software developers like Google or Microsoft and not what you'll encounter when interviewing with a business (that isn't in the software development business as their primary business such as Home Depot or Menards).

This is a good book but almost everyone is going to find something in it which isn't covered in enough depth or clarity.

Where's the rest of the book? I'm so accustomed to Wrox books being twice if not three times as large. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, just an observation.

The book is broken down into twenty chapters spread over three sections to help you prepare for that next technical interview for a Java development position. The book does NOT teach you Java. That isn't the purpose. It works as a good quick refresher for questions that might be thrown at you from a technical interview at, most likely, a hardcore software development company.

Does it hit the mark? For the most part, yes, but I'd like to see more depth with some of the subjects. 15 pages for the Data Structures and Concurrency chapters just isn't enough, especially when JUnit is covered in over 20.

As someone who does the interviewing, I've actually found it helpful from that side. If I'm doing something like say a college recruiting fair, I need multiple questions to ask candidates so the person behind can't just repeat an answer. This gives me ideas to help there. Of course, if the candidate read the book, they'll know the answers, if they have good recollection.

Will you ace the interview with the help of the book? Well, at least you shouldn't fall flat on your face. Acing would really depend on what you knew before you picked up the book though.

The publisher sent me a copy of the book in the hopes of providing an honest review.

This is a condensed, modern book for Java knowledge warm-up

First of all, this is the thinnest Wrox book I have ever bought. Great paper quality and thin in size is the best for a book. I hate other Wrox books that are bricks and not portable at all.

Second, this is a book with very wide coverage about Java Development in 368 pages. Some may complain that it did not go further into the topics like data structures, but that would violate the first merit. I believe the author did some condensation to pick some important parts. Like the String constant pool is explained ok, while class loader in JVM could have been provided in JVM chapter.

So finally, I do hope there could be a extended version of this book, including more details, while this book is still a good starter.

Some advice to the author:
(1) Code can be better refactored.
(2) Code should be hosted in GitHub. This is a must for a modern book!

About the Author

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is a bestselling author, world-renowned researcher, and one of the fathers of positive psychology. His seminal work, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (1990), was a New York Times best seller and introduced the concept of flow to mainstream audiences. Once the head of the psychology department at the University of Chicago, Csikszentmihaly founded the Quality of Life Research Center at Claremont Graduate University. His work has influenced figures such as Bill Clinton and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Now a professor at Claremont Graduate University in southern California, Csikszentmihalyi has written more than 120 journal articles and book chapters and has authored a dozen books related to positive psychology. He continues to research flow and motivation as the founder and codirector of the nonprofit Quality of Life Research Center. He lives in Claremont, California.

Philip Latter is the coauthor of Faster Road Racing (Human Kinetics, 2015) with two-time Olympian Pete Pfitzinger. A former senior writer for Running Times and current contributor to Runner’s World and runnersworld.com, Latter has profiled more than a dozen Olympians and written extensively on training methodology, exercise science, and sport psychology. He regularly lectures on flow at summer running camps and has used many of the techniques described in this book with the high school, college, and post collegiate athletes he coaches.

A runner for almost two decades, Latter earned five all-conference honors at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and holds personal bests of 14:47 for 5K, 31:24 for 10K and 1:12:11 for the half marathon. A former NCAA Division I head cross country coach at Radford University, Latter coaches runners at Brevard High School in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. He lives just outside of Brevard with his wife and two daughters.

Christine Weinkauff Duranso is a professor of psychology at both Woodbury University in Burbank, California, and California State University at San Bernardino. As a PhD student at Claremont Graduate University, Weinkauff studied under the mentorship of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and focused her research on the role of flow and exercise and how they contribute to thriving. Her dissertation considered how exercise, flow, and nature strengthen resilience and enhance well-being for college students.

Weinkauff has completed races ranging from 5K to marathon distance and has ventured into the triathlon world. She enjoys speaking to various groups about the role of flow and exercise in well-being and how flow can provide the motivation to persist in new exercise endeavors. A mother of four, she lives in Claremont, California, with her three youngest children.

Other books talk about what flow is (though few are as easy to understand as this one)

While the concept of Flow has been around since the 1970s, a book outlining how to achieve flow as a runner is unique. Other books talk about what flow is (though few are as easy to understand as this one). Myriad books have been written talking about how to get into running, improve your running and enjoy running. What makes "Running Flow" special is the way it marries these two types of books together in such a compelling way. I came away with a good understanding of what flow is (and how it differs from a "runner's high") as well as a concrete plan for how to achieve flow when running. This book is a must read for any serious runner!

A life of Flow

Great book that I'll return to. I read it less for running goals but this book is good for any goals. It covers latest research on Flow and emphasizes the role of purposeful concentration in all areas of Flow. It also covers mind states, intrinsic motivations, and the value of constant gratitude. There are also lengthy discussions on the limitations of Flow and how the environment can affect Flow.

Lacy, who holds degrees in English and art, has exhibited in galleries throughout the United States. He’s worked as a summer camp director, English and art teacher, freelance artist, and an investigator for Texas Child Protective Services.

This is a great book on the subject of abduction from a personal point of view. I can only imagine how many others who have experienced abduction have been terrified to the point of never disclosing it to anyone, let alone writing a book about it. It is an excellent book that I highly recommend.

About the Author
Dunstan Brown investigates autonomous morphology, morphology-syntax interaction, and typology. His recent work has focused on describing and understanding different aspects of morphological complexity. After graduating with a BA in Modern Languages and a Master of Linguistics from the University of Manchester, he completed a PhD in Linguistics at the University of Surrey and worked there for many years before taking up a 50th Anniversary Chair at the University of York in 2012.

Andrew Hippisley is Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of English at the University of Kentucky.

A Wild Thing Is Born

In the gorgeously illustrated GREENLING, on his barren land Mr. Barleycorn finds a strange Greenling baby in a flower pod where an old tree once stood. He isn't quite sure what to do with it, but he knows it's not right to leave the baby alone outside so he brings it home with him. His wife is in a fit, but allows the baby to stay. But the Greenling has a strange power that causes green plants to grow and Mr. and Mrs. Barleycorn's lives change forever because of the little green baby. The story has a rather strong environmental message to it, but I still enjoyed the book. The illustrations are works of art and doing an excellent job of augmenting the story and bringing it to life. I'm surprised someone in Hollywood hasn't snatched up the rights to this book because it would make a great movie (either live action or animated). Overall, I found GREENLING to be a beautifully illustrated children's book with a good message and a decent plot.

If style never goes out of fashion, then a biography of Coco Chanel shouldn't either. First published 25 years ago and out of print for the last decade, Charles-Roux's book was originally all black and white, but large color photos and illustrations have been added for this reissue, and the layout has been redesigned as well. (The text remains the same.) As a former editor-in-chief of French Vogue for 12 years and a longtime friend of Chanel, Charles-Roux collected a lot of photos of the fashion icon and of those allowed into her inner circle. She shares many of them in this massive biography, which follows Chanel's journey from her birth on August 20, 1883, to her days as a shop girl in Moulins to her triumph in, and transformation of, the fashion world. The book also provides insight into how Chanel's style developed and how its evolution was related to her defiance of the social conventions of her time; Coco was a great friend of the Cubists and she shared many of their avante-garde tastes. Charles-Roux's analysis may occasionally have more style than substance, but this balance would hardly have bothered Chanel, for whom style was always everything. And with a Chanel exhibition coming up at the Metropolitan Museum in May, 2005, it seems unlikely that this book will every be out of print for so long again.

A designer of authentic beauty

This is a substantial book in both size and pictorial content.

As an ideal complement to the Metropolitan Museum's Chanel exhibit last spring (2005), this book actually exceeds - and outlasts - the exhibit itself.

More than just an intelligent, fascinating woman, Chanel was a fascinating opportunist in the way that she manipulated and transformed the trends of her times (and many men of her times), turning them to her advantage. She was as much a businesswoman and social and cultural politician as a fashion designer, and to see her in this book's big, beautiful photographs, modeling her own creations, is an inspiration to any woman who disbelieves that humble beginnings and a less than conventionally perfect countenance can lead to high achievement.

The best photograph of all - the photograph that tells all - graces the book's cover: one look at that face of intelligence, intensity, self-composure, and elegance, and one knows what the book is all about (philosophically as well as biographically) even before opening it.

The classic Chanel endures as a legend and lesson in the achievement of authentic beauty, i.e., defined by compelling creation rather than passive, taken-for-granted standards of acceptance.

Entertaining book with mostly pictures

I was looking for a book showing photos of Chanel's clothing designs and styles. This book focuses more on her life and the celebrities and cultural/social trends of her era (spanning 1910's - 1950's), so if you are looking to see her clothing styles and designs, you will be disappointed as there isn't that much coverage of the actual clothing. However, it is a very absorbing, encyclopedic, pictorial collection of the people of Chanel's time and you can spend many a lazy Sunday afternoon thoroughly exploring les temps perdus. There are many many pictures of Coco Chanel - like Madonna, she looks different every few years, a real chameleon. It retails at $65, so the $37 Amazon price is a good deal. It is a heavy thick book with glossy pages.

Christmas gift for my daughter. She loved the book and deemed it a keeper. We donate a lot of books that we fine just ok to the library and keep only books that we really liked and would look at or read more than once. This was a keeper
