About the Author

David Damrosch is Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard University. He is a past president of the American Comparative Literature Association, and has written widely on world literature from antiquity to the present. His books include What Is World Literature? (2003), The Buried Book: The Loss and Rediscovery of the Great Epic of Gilgamesh (2007), and How to Read World Literature (2009). He is the founding general editor of the six-volume Longman Anthology of World Literature, 2/e (2009) and the editor of Teaching World Literature (2009).�

Christopher Baswell is A. W. Clare Carroll is Director of Renaissance Studies at The Graduate Center, City University of New York and Professor of Comparative Literature at Queens College and at The Graduate Center, CUNY.� Her research is in Renaissance Studies, with particular interests in early modern colonialism, epic poetry, historiography, and translation. She is the author of The Orlando Furioso: A Stoic Comedy, and editor of Richard Beacon's humanist dialogue on the colonization of Ireland, Solon His Follie. Her most recent book is Circe's Cup: Cultural Transformations in Early Modern Ireland. She has received Fulbright Fellowships for her research and the Queens College President's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Andrew Hadfield is Professor of English at The University of Sussex. He is the author of a number of books, including Shakespeare and Republicanism (2005), which was awarded the 2006 Sixteenth-Century Society Conference Roland H. Bainton Prize for Literature; Literature, Travel and Colonialism in the English Renaissance, 1540-1625 (1998); and Spenser's Irish Experience: Wilde Fruyt and Salvage Soyl (1997). Make no mistake. Kent McDonald’s book Beyond Requirements: Analysis with an Agile Mindset is a valuable resource for the entire agile team. He makes it clear – it's the work of business analysis, not the title or role “business analyst” that is an essential ingredient for successful agile teams.

In the spirit of one of Kent’s agile guiding principles, “Simplify”, I’m using a mind map as a “barely sufficient approach” to share what and why I value Beyond Requirements: Analysis with an Agile Mindset. I encourage anyone involved in agile business analysis work to dip into Beyond Requirements. Fantastic overview of current practices and ideas

The most useful thing about this book is that it introduces pretty much all the currently popular ideas and practices for product management/business analysis applicable to iterative delivery. Each technique is explained within the context where it applies, with some nice tips on when to use it, when not to use it, and how to get the most out of it.

I'd recommend this book to anyone working in an agile or lean software process that needs to discover, analyse or document stakeholder needs. This includes product owners, but also delivery team members who want to improve their requirements analysis skills. People new to this field will find plenty of ways to get started, and experienced product managers will surely discover some interesting gems to try out.

A Useful Guide for Agile Teams

Kent’s book is a useful guide for agile teams, and punctuates the importance of analysis in agile discovery and delivery. He provides an elegant set of principles, a useful set of techniques nicely organized in a Jogger-like format, and makes it real with four case studies. I particularly appreciate Kent’s emphasis on value and collaboration, the distinction between discovery and delivery, and the pithy and powerful summaries in each chapter entitled “If You Remember Nothing Else”. Get it, read it. Reference it. You’ll find Beyond Requirements a valuable guide in your agile work.

Entertaining, but ...

I first read this book nearly 20 years ago. At the time, I was a young guy, and a rebellious message combined with an interesting plot was very intriguing. For years I thought of it as a 5-star novel.

Move forward those 20 years and I decided to read the book again. While I found it decent this time, I immediately realized it didn't carry the same weight that it did back then.

I don't want to sound insulting, but I believe this is best appreciated by a younger person. I'm not saying immature, but ... less experienced.

I screamed "anarchy" and drew the little symbols all over my skateboard as a kid. It seemed cool at the time. As a father with three kids, as a productive member of society, I understand now what anarchy would really mean. I no longer draw little A's with circles on things.

In this same way, I still appreciate the youthful vigor in Fight Club. And the writing is really good. I admire Palahniuk for having written it. But, I prefer a more subtle manipulation of my senses ... the way I prefer being creeped out by a horror movie versus buckets of blood. Massage my intellect, don't blind me with shock factor stuff. I'll still watch the gore, for amusement, but I just can't bring myself to evaluate it in the same manner as something truly amazing.

It's a good read; it's a fun read; that's it.

Favorite Book of All Time

WOW. I saw the movie and knew I had to read the book. There are some differences between the book and the movie, notably the ending. However, with that being said, this book is fantastic and remains my favorite book to this day. There are so many themes and motifs in this book that make it phenomenal. If I was to read one book it would be this one. However, I do feel that this book resonates more strongly with men than women. It deals with issues such as ideas of masculinity, evolutionary behavior, challenging what is commonly accepted, the beauty of simplicity, and the evils of materialism. There is a very good reason that this book has developed a "cult-like" following and for those who believe that this book is all about fighting is not looking deep enough and not paying closely to what the author is writing about. If you have not watched the movie or have not read this book, you are in for a fantastic ride.

This book is amazing. It's funny, it's harsh, it's uncomfortable, and it makes you question things you'd probably never even thought to question. It moves pretty quick, so you won't spend a lot of time actually reading it, giving you more time to wonder what the hell you just read, but in a good way. It's a satire on all that we hold dear in modern day America, and it makes you want to go out and shake things up, to mess with the status quo, to throw some bricks in some windows and pick a few fights.
Now for the question everyone asks: is the book better, or the movie?
Answer: Both are amazing. The movie changed some scenes in the book or omitted them completely, but it worked out fine without ruining the story. Interestingly enough, the book glosses over some things that the movie actually puts more of a spotlight on, and vice versa. Both watching the movie and reading the book will really give you a perspective on what Palahniuk and the director of the movie (sorry I don't know your name, Mr. Director--you still did a good job) think is important and interesting in each. The subtle differences are what make you think, and what make you really appreciate both.
Check the book out, and the movie if you haven't seen it. Both are awesome, and will take you on a ridiculous ride.

About the Author

Joshua Rosenbaum is a Managing Director at UBS Investment Bank in the Global Industrial Group. He originates, structures, and advises on M&A, corporate finance, and capital markets transactions. Previously, he worked at the International Finance Corporation, the direct investment division of the World Bank. He received his AB from Harvard and his MBA with Baker Scholar honors from Harvard Business School.

Joshua Pearl is an investment analyst at Brahman Capital Corp. Previously, he structured and executed leveraged loan and high yield bond financings, as well as leveraged buyouts and restructurings as a Director at UBS Investment Bank in Leveraged Finance. Prior to UBS, he worked at Moelis & Company and Deutsche Bank. He received his BS in Business from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.

Perfect in all aspects in order to translate knowledge into practice

A much perfect aid to consolidate all knowledge conveyed by the main book, this 'assistant' issue will certainly help you to get familiar with practical matters in the area, offering a rich opportunity to learn through fully cooncrete applications.

It's good but also pricey

Hard to use unless you get the whole package that includes the CDs for models and the workbook. But overall, a great outline for all the valuation concepts. A bit repetitive for people coming from a strong accounting background.

Solid, Articulate, Eye-Opening

I started reading Crafting A Theology of Stewardship with a bit of expectation. Okay, I had a lot of expectation. I'm tired of the same ole' drivel when it comes to talking about money in the church. The bar was pretty high for what I needed from this book by Joel Mikell.

My expectations were met. It is biblically sound. It is easy to read. It brought me back to "why" my giving matters, and it had me considering the condition of my heart. Joel doesn't write from the position of a pastor or non-profit executive who will benefit (financially) from you listening to his advice. He is a life-long follower of Jesus, and a business man who has a heart to help others learn the joy and freedom in generosity.

I especially like the illustration he shares about his grand-daughter Addison who, when encouraged to give in the offering at church, exclaimed: "I don't want to give to the church--I want to give to people!" That is the heart so many carry. But sometimes the church confuses the message and gets in the way of what matters.

Joel writes for everyone--but there are especially great take-aways for pastors and church leaders who are trying to get this right. This book includes a practical, step-by-step approach to increasing the generosity-quotient in your church.

If you can't tell, I highly recommend this book.

"A Must Read for Pastors"

As one who has lived in the stewardship laboratory (translate: local church) for the last twenty-eight years, Joel Mikell's wisdom comes as help from heaven. We need more than a "cut and paste" Bible verse approach if we are going to move from stewardship campaigns to stewardship cultures in our churches. Joel's work has already been seminal in the life and teaching of our church, and I can attest to its transformative influence and power. This little book is a crisp, clean read and everyone from pastors and congregational leaders to the person in the pew will benefit from it. This is great stuff!

Changing the Stewardship Culture

"Crafting a Theology of Stewardship" is a much needed addtion to the study and practice of stewardship for the local church. Joel Mikell moves logically from what scripture says about stewardship to the why and how of a theology of stewardship. It is a good workbook/guide for a church looking at changing the stewardship culture for the first time to those who have studied this many times.

Joel speaks very clear language and this easy to understand book has lists of ideas and practical suggestions in a great format. The five examples of crafting a stewardship theology from real churches is valuble as well as the Appendix with its long list of resources. A very quick and good read.
