Paula Rutherford is president of Just ASK Publications & Professional Development in Alexandria, Virginia. In addition to her work as a consultant and trainer, Paula's professional experience includes work in regular education K-12 as a teacher of high school history and social sciences, physical education, Spanish, and kindergarten, as well as a special education teacher, coordinator of special education programs, school administrator at the middle school and high school levels, and as a central office staff development specialist. She works extensively with districts as they engage in long-term systemic work to align processes such as hiring, induction, professional development, school improvement plans, and supervision and evaluation. She also leads Mentoring in the 21st Century� Institutes across the country and has developed a comprehensive Mentoring in the 21st Century� Resource Kit so that districts can replicate the Just ASK institutes and provide extensive follow-up support for mentors. Paula is committed to building in-house capacity and has developed a New Teacher Professional Development Kit and a Certified Local Trainer (CLT) program based on Instruction for All Students, Leading the Learning, and Why Didn't I Learn This in College?

Fabulous tool for student-centered activities.

Rutherford's book is an excellent resource for planning active, engaging lessons. Nice breakdown of the variety of ways each activity can be used (i.e. assessment, reflection, setting purpose, building collaborative skills, etc.) Easy to make correlations to Blooms and MI. Includes on-line access to tools and templates reproducibles.

Brilliant book! Paula Rutherford is a passionate, creative educator who travels the country finding innovative, research-based strategies for engaging learning at all levels. This book is a dynamic compilation of many successful, fun, thought-provoking activities which any teacher can quickly implement in his/her classroom. Our school was lucky enough to have Rutherford as a trainer recently and I immediately tried out several of her suggested lessons. Students were engaged, learning, and had fun! I highly recommend this excellent book. It is very much worth the investment!

great book for activity strategies in the classroom

This is a textbook full of ideas and strategies to implement activities in the classroom. They are presented one per page or two pages, and having tried three of them, they work very well. Kids love them and it brings novelty in the classroom while enhancing learning. Some may sound familiar, but they are still very well organized and enhanced.
