Absolutely one of the best books ever written

I first read this book while flailing around in the intellectual morass of graduate school. I found the volume entirely by accident in the stacks while looking for some other book (which I've long since forgotten). I came very close to stealing the volume and repeatedly checked out the book for more than two semesters. As this was pre-internet days I had to really scrape and struggle to find a copy of the book for sale, and it was already hard to find back in the mid 1990s.
Anyhow, this book is an exquisite primer on everything and anything of interest that occurred during the the twentieth-century. Cantor writes with humor and is succinct without being reductionist. I've since read other books by Cantor, and enjoyed those as well. However, this is a book I have consulted numerous times over the years-- a perfect reference book for those interested in the intellectual trends of our times.
