Review
"Maurer and co-author Katie Weeks have created a must-have manual for anyone considering beginning an interior design practice. Running a successful practice requires more than talent and enthusiasm. The subsequent parts include starting and sustaining the business, and the sale or turnover when it's time to retire. Several examples of actual business practice follow an overview that explains each topic area and how they apply to an interior design practice." (San Francisco Book Review, May 25, 2010)

Read this book before you read any other design books!!!
By Kathleen B. Goldfarb
As an professional member of ASID and designer for 37+ years, I applaud and welcome this GREAT book! This book was expensive, but well worth the investment and should be required reading for all designers who wish to earn a healthy income, enough to have a real retirement. In fact, it should be re-read and shared with all who will contribute to your success or failure.

I have networked and attended countless programs and CEU's in a quest to hone my knowledge, skills and most importantly, profitability so I can support my family and have a reasonable lifestyle. The formal training offered in design schools does not come near to offering students enough business exposure within a true context. Any designer / decorator with entrepreneurial aspirations should intern in a business setting and spend at least 2 years in face-to-face commercial/consumer sales or problem-solving for any product or service.

Typically, sound business practices as outlined in this book are not implemented by most of my design peers, most of whom either fail, exit the business or merely play around as they follow any blind lead in search of their next fee. Few earn enough on a consistent basis (even after years in the business) to support an average family. This book is filled with well-written firm scenarios from around the country, even detailing real failures and remedies. It's great to see so many relevant graphics and the contract documents and ASID Code of Ethics at the end are a bonus.

I would rate higher, but would have liked to read more about some specific topics, namely franchising and opportunities for interior designers in management or other industry-related careers where there are greater options. Interior design is often an unstable career and personal success is tied directly to one's networking efforts and being well-connected, integrity, ability to communicate well and generate new business more than design talent or just desire. This is true whether one owns their own business or works for others. What is your value to your/their firm's bottom line?

Great for all Levels
By Caroline Leemis
Interior Design in Practice: Case Studies of Successful Business Models is a wonderful book for any designer. As a young designer, it provided valuable insight into small business operations and I foresee it being on my bookshelf for reference for a long time. A wide range of case studies are provided, and a vast range of topics discussed from staffing to branding and marketing. It's an excellent book that focuses in on tips and information specifically for the design industry. A must-read for any potential or seasoned design business owner.

Interestingly Informative!
By John VanderHelm
This is a great resource for all interior designers whether just thinking of starting a business or for seasoned designers with a growing firm. Each page of this book is packed with an abundance of useful information, covering all aspects of a design business. Adding real designers' success stories makes it read more like a novel than a reference book. This one is a keeper!
