Beneath the Veil of the Strange Verses describes the roots out of which this conflicted desire grows, and it explores how this desire mirrors the violence that undergirds the scandal itself. The book shows how readers seem to be confronted with a stark choice: either turn away from scandal completely or become enthralled and thus trapped by it. Using examples from philosophy, literature, and the Bible, Alberg leads the reader on a road out of this false dichotomy. By its nature, the author argues, scandal is the basis of our reading; it is the source of the obstacles that prevent us from understanding what we read, and of the bridges that lead to a deeper grasp of the truth.

Looking beneath the surface of violence to its hidden motives in our disavowed desires is as difficult as it is necessary and neglected, and even forbidden as scandalous, especially in our age of culture as spectacle. Jeremiah Alberg musters some of the subtlest intellectual resources from Plato and Dante to Nietzsche, Rousseau, and Girard in order to courageously undertake this indispensable task. He adroitly leads us to read the revelation beneath the veil of these and other (notably Flannery O’Connor’s) “secular scriptures.”

What is the relationship between looking, reading, and scandal? Alberg answers with a subtle, thoughtful, and finally stunning meditation on the work of Nietzsche, Rousseau, and Flannery O’Connor. Beginning with Plato’s story of Leontius, who is torn between fascination and disgust at the corpses lying before the executioner, Alberg argues we feel both attracted and repelled by what we see when we read literature; we are “scandalized” by it. Jeremiah L. Alberg is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at International Chris�tian University in Tokyo. He is Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Executive Secretary of the Colloquium on Violence and Religion (COV&R).

Luminous readings

This elegant book draws its title from Dante, "O you who have sound intellects,/ look at the doctrine which hides itself/beneath the veil of the strange verses." What is hidden to our mind's eye, our confirmation biases, the pathologies of desire that coordinate our attitudes with those of the anonymous and sometimes bloodthirsty crowd, is revealed in the pages, literary and biblical, that Alberg explores with admirable clarity, coherence, and wit. What is revealed, as his subtitle announces, is the logic of scandal by which humans are attracted to and repelled by scenes that engage our deepest moral sensibilities. The insights that Ren� Girard has drawn from Dante are enriched when Flannery O'Connor's dark writings are drawn into this conversation, and when the desperations of Rousseau and Nietzsche are decoded for our benefit.

Interesting overview of Girardian ideas on forgiveness and grace

The first few pages were just fine. Then the writer began writing in long sentences with difficult references and obtuse phrasing that made it a bit confusing and hard to follow. Chapter five saved the book from being a waste of time and was the clearest part of the book. It ended a bit abruptly, with little clarifying discussion about forgiveness and grace. Fortunately I read the book with others, one of whom was a Girardian scholar who helped me untangle things.
